Martin, the clamp that goes on the HT lead has an arrow on it to point the direction of the elecricity 
I use a SPARK-RITE strobe, think it's about 30yrs old and works great with points/electronic and variotronic.
2 wires to a 12v battery and a connector between spark plug and cap.
