Mate of mine had a reed come adrift while in France this year. Gave the same symptom. Lots of spit back and couldn't get it to rev. We stripped top end down and one reed was just sitting there with no screws. Luckily, one had embedded itself in the the cylinder head, and the other dropped out of the transfer port when I took it out into daylight to check for scoring in the barrel. Damage to cylinder head was superficial and cured with a bit of wet 'n dry. Fortunately no damage to barrel. Found two replacement screws and Loctited them in for safety. He got all the way back OK (until his exhaust disappeared
) Check they're nice and tight
Look for feathering on the edges of the reeds as a sign of wear and replace if necessary.

Just done the reeds on my imola and fitted an LTH manifold, I used to have a lake of oil on the floorboards and its stopped it,
the reeds looked fine with only 1 corner nibbled off but thought I should change them while its off. worth doing
