Hi all,

I saw some on an ebay advert. What are the benefits of fitting them? and where to find them?

thanks for your help,

I would say that on a standard scooter with cable operated brakes, they would make no difference whatsoever, and may in fact worsen the situation (less contact area due to the grooving)

However, on a well set up hydraulic system they should help reduce fade due to better pad/ shoe/ disc/ drum cooling.

BUT.....it all depends on the friction material used, and what temperature it was designed (if indeed it was designed and not simply "altered" with a junior hacksaw in some far off back street sweatshop....) for.

Personally, replacement brake shoes and pads vary tremendously in their ability to work, so I always try to use some original "Innocenti" ones from the spares box (suitably cleaned up of course!) on a standard scooter.

Heat build up between pads and disc creates gases that try to push the pads away on a disc brake setup which reduces the braking effect, the grooves create an escape path for those gases. Not sure if the same effect occurs in a drum system. I've seen the Newfren shoes described as "Aqua", possible reference to grooves in tyres being effective in removing water to stop the tyre aqua-planing in rain but I'd imagine that doesn't apply within a drum brake. Very nice quality shoes though.

All the ones I have tried have been crap, the linings are too hard.Best stick to Innocenti originals or Indian " Mikano" ones work well. The idea with the grooves is to disperse the dust etc and keep the linings cleaner.
