Pinking with a variotronic? I'm sure i'm having pinking problems around 3/4 throttle. It runs very well up to that point but i thought a ignition system like the Vario would counteract pinking with it's timing altering capabilities :? Set up is a Mugello 225 stage 5 30mm dell MB Devtour pipe. Thanks for any help ;)

sounds like a weak mixture at that 3/4 throttle opening.

Hi Sean, so could it be as simple as a richer main jet? Which at present is a 128 or would it be the atomiser? I realise to dyno would be the best option :)

the variotronic can break down and infact advance further just before it retards so check it

also look at where it retards and if the muggy is sitting in the advance area while cruising then you will be getting hot.

what you want to check for is that you get a steady marking as you increase the revs with a decent strobe, if it goes fizzy or disapears then reapears then you may have problems.

dont listen to scooter dealers when they say its normal, its not its actual your spark advancing and retarding all over the place. yours may be fine but this fault can exist with the variotronic

Can someone explain what pinking means? I know it has something to do with detonation but I dont know what that means either? Is it misfireing?

no one can explane it :? its one of those things that there is no word for.

its when you get gases going pop at a time other than when the plug is sparking. caused by various things like carb and ignition but also squish and compression.

most common on petrol cars which if you are in too high a gear as you excelerate to get a noise like ball bearings rattling in a coke can

but with a commuter bike engine that is tuned it leads to a hole being burned through the piston top or at the sides where it melts the edge above the ring.

its messy and can result in a top end re build due to the bits going into the bearings which is why if you get it then you check everything untill you find it....dont ignore it.

Laurence how are you? It's good to hear from you. My set up is
30mm Dellorto
Main 128
Atomiser AV268
Needle X7 2nd clip from top of needle
Pilot 50
Choke 60
Devtour exhaust
What do you think???????
I have had this problem quite a while, but havn't really used it often on open road until this year and when i do i'm backing off the throttle to the point where the rattling stops.
Thanks for all replies on this
