Snapped Layshaft

Coming home from Kelso, the layshaft snapped and the hub's wrecked too. It was an original Innocenti layshaft.

I've a NOS one I could use, but now I'm a bit nervous. Seems a shame to ditch. Am I being too paranoid?

Why is it shiny around the locking grub screw? Has that come loose/sloppy. There is a problem with some washers below the main nut being too thick and allowing the locking plate to sit so low on the nut that the nut can come loose. If the hub then comes loose and the threaded section carries all the weight of the bike then I'm not surprised it has snapped.

I'm not saying that IS what happened, but if the thread section snapped first you wouldn't expect to see all the wear on the locking components. If so then another rear shaft, another hub and some QUALITY nuts/washers and locking components should be fine.

I never notices that.

I'm cautious about wheels after the issue with my hub and layshaft on my 225 engine. So with this, I had been checking the wheels constantly including the last stop before this happened (about ten miles previous) and didn't notice this or feel anything.

I'm heading out shortly to start stripping.

Who sells the correct washer? All the ones I've seen recently are Indian wavy ones that do look on the thick side.
Sounds like there's a market for a much thicker outer washer too. Maybe one that you can bolt down in all 3 places?
There seems to be a spate of rear hubs undoing themselves recently or am I just paranoid because it also happened to me?

MB make a thicker locking ring in stainless

it is thicker than normal so it does not loosen under the standard Lambretta rear hub nut.

Cs engineering has Made a washer that fits the nut on all sides not just the corners as in a star one in stainless for years now. It also has holes for Allen bolt inlots of differnt places so youdont have to over torque toget Allen bolt to line up

I've been thinking about this for some time but being a lazy git- never did anything further than ask less than enthusiastic fabricator for his opinion:

Why not weld a small piece of metal with a hole in it on the outside of the washer in line with the bolt hole to enable a lock wire to be used - or is this already being used perhaps on the track?

if it is a good hub and taper you dont need a locking ring,this looks like it had neither and the locking ring still hasnt saved it!
