RT225 dyno testing

Mark and Max have spent the last fortnight playing around with exhausts on Mouse's 225RT, preparing it for the trip to Gijon (which will mostly be by road not by ferry).

Lot's of tinkering with u-bends, silencers etc. Lots of exhausts being cut open and looked at.

Basic engine spec is 225 RT kit, 70mm piston, 58mm alpha crank. Carb is a 28mm VHST which is a new-ish Dellorto flatslide we are trying after seeing some good results on some autos.

Solid red line is horsepower with devtour pipe.
Dotted red line is horsepower with modified clubman.

Solid green line is torque with devtour pipe.
Dotted green line is torque with modified clubman.

As you can see the clubman is slightly up on power and torque up to about 5000-5500 rpm, the devtour takes over after that.

Both exhausts hit peak power at about 6500 rpm.

In real terms using SX200 gearing 15/46 this would equate (on the road) to being sat in 4th and just winding the engine on in 4th from about 40-45mph to about 65mph. Both engines would over-run to 70-75mph (we find that once the engine hits peak power on the dyno any power after peak would be only be seen on the road downhill or with a tailwind). The devtour with the better torque would have a nice powerband kicking in at 50mph or so. Of course there is plenty of torque to pull higher gearing.

The clubman would be better for round town up to 50mph - the devtour would pull better after 50mph so better for overtaking lorries without dropping down a gear etc.

To me the interesting thing is that both curves are so broadly similar which makes you wonder if we all really need expansions on touring type engines.

Have you tried the mikuni 24mm or the kehin 28mm power jet
what would the effect of a 64mm stroke crank have
and finally how high gearing wise could you go, mouse is half my weight

A clubman style pipe which will perform well for touring on a performance engine is a bit like the holly grail for a lot of people including myself.
I was up at Doncaster a few weeks ago when the pipes were being tested, by chance, I would love something like this on my TS1 that give a more standard look and sound.
after asking the question to Mark, "are they going to be produced"? with great excitement!, just got the, "oh hav'nt decided", answer.

all i can say is, lets hope so, I'll be first in the queue.!!!

We've not tried the 24mm mikuni on this engine but we've got some good results on an rt 190 which was only slightly down on power to the 225, the rt225 wins on torque though. I think Darrells 255 ended up with a 24mm. I don't think Mark has tried the keihin yet.

64mm would push the torque up, how much though I don't know.

Gearing I don't know, you have to see what Mark thinks. I know you are after the holy grail of doing 60mph at tickover so you can pretend you are on a train and read the paper with both hands.

Ian has this modified clubman been run back to back with say an AF or Tino one? ..if so I assume it must compare well to be used in this comparison.

looks interesting.

Hi Guys,

My 255 ...... yes 255, not 225, ended up with a 30mm phbh, still pretty rich whilst running in, but I am so pleased with the performance, it really is fantastic.

Funny enough I was chatting with Nic on the South Downs run, and have come to the conclusion that the style of riding most of us do today, we really don't need an expansion fitted, the Clubman style pipe really is the best. Mind you saying that, I've still got my B Race one off fitted until such a time as MB's Clubman is available or I get some time to try out one of Ron Moss' 48mm Clubmans maybe........

My RT 190 used for most of last year's season has also done me proud, and I'll be dropping this off to MBs maybe next week for some more work over the next few months, might ask Mark to fit a reed valve to this as well, cut down on the fuel consumption even more.......... but as usual I'll go with his recommendations.

Ian, maybe see you at Max's do next weekend ?

All the best

Darrell

I had to adjust the float height on my VHST as it held back and high revs and all ok after this. Its worked well and clean on mine.

Yes I had the same problem. When you buy them new they are listed as being for a GasGas trials bike. They've been fitted to ApriliaRS125 for some time now though which have been alright.

Yeah, I know they've been around a while. Before we start offering new carbs we like to get to know them. We've had a 24mm Mikuni sat on the shelf for about 3 years, just got round to playing with it.
