At the risk of opening a whole duct full of worms....

I was looking underneath the scoot and it did strike me that there might be an awful lot more airflow over the hot exhaust if the splash plate was gone.

Also a big heatsink on the downpipe wouldn't hurt. I'm not sure if something with stubby little fins like this would make a significant difference though.

ref: removing the splashplate - i thought that when you put a plate like that under the scooter and moved at speed it produces a swirl of air behind it and a lot of air flows up into the area behind (around the exhaust)?

i have a spanish cowling with the deflector - running in an iron barrel at the weekend revving up a long hill (not good) it nipped up. whern i took it apart to polish off the seize points i found it had seized either side of the bore around the transfers NOT the exhaust side - maybe a symptom of the cooling being EFFICIENTLY directed to the exhaust?

Interesting, what is the splash actually meant to do? (or is the clue in the name?) Do other enclosed engined scooters have them?

those exhaust flange finned manifolds may well help...but not if behind splash plates...

the splash plate does exactly what it says...
and acts just the same as a fly screen does....it deflects air and water /dirt around and away from the scooter...and so restricts air flow around the hot engine....
if this was not the case and it in fact actually helped cooling as you suggest...then all group 4 racers would be using them instead of discarding them surely....
