An Indian kit is ideal as a starter as its cheap but not a proper stage 4 but if tuned further its a fantastic.Ive used one since 2002 and its been 100% reliable and good for long distance and pulls 2 up great with 4.8 and good on fuel even with a 28 carb.Its the port timings that matter and a sensible pipe,i use a PM which is supposed to be peaky but find it spot on.The guy that did it done a proper road tune on it and it wasnt expensive but it was back in 2002.

I'm going for an MB SIL 210 with the RT piston. Yes it's an iron barrel but run through a moderate carb and exhaust it should be OK. A more than one time 'winner' on the LCGB Coast to Coast was riding with an iron barrel and the distance is 100miles+ in one quick hop.

A muggy 225 has extremely lame port timmings, fortunately with a 60mm crank the exhaust and transfer timings are great for touring. Just take 1mm from the piston skirt and you have something that delivers power in a similar way to the Muggy 186 but 44cc bigger so more power and torque.

Since the temperature has finally gone above zero and the arctic wind has mellowed a bit I shall be giving my scoot a good test today. For those that don't remember its a mugello taken out to 71mm with a 62mm crank and an LTH reed manifold all running with a standard SX200 gearbox. The 5 plate clutch was slipping and so I whipped off the chain case this week and ground a whisker off the kickstart shaft just in case it was rubbing.

Once I've completed fatherly duties and taken daughter and her mates to the pictures this morning I'll give the scoot a thrashing and see if the clutch is fixed. I'm not confident that it will help to be honest which will be a real pain. The set-up seems exactly what I was looking for. Masses of torque and a great cruiser. (Mind you, for the money I've spent it bloody should be!)

just the material costs of a rebore, re plate, lth reed kit and piston parts must have bought you very close to the price of a rt230 kit.

its the dilemma im in, sell up and cut my losses and buy an rt kit or continue with the muggy or rapido options. starting again its a no brainer, the rt kit is dearer but I dont have to go through all the tooing and frowing trying to maximise the performance or worry about holing the pistion/ tapered bore/ bad finish/iron liner wear issues ect.

my scooters spend more time in bits than on the road and thats what i want to put an end to.

I already had a dead mugello and apart from the top-end, the total cost included a new clutch, a gearbox rebuild, assembly and a dyno run. It still makes me dizzy to think about it though. Still, feck it, I might drop dead tomorrow and you can't take it with you.
