New Casings always with Endplates?
I've heard that new casings come with a 'matched' endplate but how can this be measured so critically?

The end plate is bolted on to the case and they are machined together at the factory
Slow is the new fast!
I know what you mean but why don't they sell them separtely. As to me they all seem pretty much interchangeable to me.CPH Lambretta wrote:The end plate is bolted on to the case and they are machined together at the factory

Because then your layshaft might sit on the p155.
I have seen them sold individually, but normally they are sold as matched pairs like vespa engine blocks

I can say they definetly need to be matched, there is upto 5mm diference in the ones I tried. We made a solid bearing size ring and fitted a layshaft to it. We fitted this to an engine as normal then torqued up layshaft using a tube of steel. If you make a push fit bush for endplate to replace bearing housing and fit it as you would a new bearing track.make sure the dowels are in casing along with endplate studs and place endplate on layshaft. You will soon see how much difference there is in plates
Second that. As i was there.mark wrote:I can say they definetly need to be matched, there is upto 5mm diference in the ones I tried. We made a solid bearing size ring and fitted a layshaft to it. If you do use a mismatched endplate though, and when you torque down the layshaft, using bearings as usual, it would seem to me that if the axle doesn't lock up and is free as it would be on a matched set-up, then you would be able to use that. C3 bearings give a little tiny bit of wiggle room.
If it was impossible to use mismatched parts, then all of the cases sold used over the last 30 years would still be sitting around doing nothing, which they are not.
That's not going anywhere...

No one has any more thoughts on this? Am I just more stupid than I thought I am? Hands up who has built an engine using a case they bought without an endplate. I know I have built more than a few...

You may just have been lucky each time. Endplates are cheap enough, and its worth having a few around if you don't have the original that was matched to the cases.

i`ve built a couple - last one was a spanish casing came with no endplate so i bought a brand new genuine SIL one - all checked up and shimmed up perfectly - maybe it was luck - if it wasnt right i would n`t have let it go.
agreed that if you have a few (which I do) you should be able to manage
its like vespa engine casings - i`ve assembled them in the past unmatched
best advise is to try it - as already said you will know if its not right
