does anyone have a Harry Barlow (pro-porting) 175 barrel on there scoot that he has ported to let me know how it performs incomparison to the 186 Mugello kits. My head is quite screwed up as to which way to spend my money,if i don't spend it soon my Mrs will find use for it!
porting my Tv barrel, mugello IV 186,rt195. i kow there are extremes in pricing on these options which is exactly whats making it hard to decide.i am going to have the crank upgraded etc for the extra performance, but will more expence really make the performance that much better for two, maybe three times the cost?

want an engine with touring tune not fast road.

Diablo's the man to tell you about HB tuned barrels.
I have a SR190 barrel ProPorting tuned with added boost port (like in the Mugello) fitted with Suzuki Piston attached to a TV rod in a GP crank - checked and trued by Harry.
It's not on the road yet I'm afraid but it was a very modest overall cost for the work he did (inc re-profiling a head to match) No top and tailing required oh and he ported my (Spanish) cases too.
Only thing I'd say is he can get very busy so be clear about how long he'll take to turn it around.
I have to say that the work he did to mine looks very good and the cost was less than you'd expect - a lot less.

He tunes for road going torquey motors

Thanks Stokie for your reply,
I've spoken to Harry and he sounds very knowledgeable and he can talk for England, The prices he has quoted for the work seems very fair for the improvements he states. i'm just looking for people who are running his barrels and setups to get some idea of the performance. it's the old dilemma, will it be good enough with a tuned barrel, bigger carb, new crank, which is the cheapest option, or spend more on a alloy barrel kit, the MB Rt's sound great, but are hefty on the pocket.
I really only want to spend the money once, if I'm convinced these top kits are that much better both in performance and reliability then i'll pay it, but if not i'd sooner spend the difference on other stuff!

at about £459 and £357 for Imola and Mugello respectively you might also want to consider GT186 at £330. Good torquey touring tune and very flexible in their application. I have about 15 left, 500pcs made so there are more than a few people who can give you a reference.

Cheers Rich,
can you give me a little more info as to the performance i could expect for your barrel kit. looking to put a 60mm crank,42 clubman and a 25 or 28 del, it has a li150 box with a 16 front sproc. What HP and speed would i expect from this setup. Would it perform better than the Mugello with the same setup. Your honest comments would be grateful,

Do you have a 175 barrel that you're considering getting tuned and weighing up the pros and cons against an off the shelf kit or will you need to buy a barrel regardless of which route you take.
I like the sound of the RT190, the latest 186 mugello and the RB20 but if cost is a consideration and you have a barrel to start with then I'd seriously consider the ProPorting route but maybe upp the cc to a 190. I've not yet heard a negative comment about Harrys work, he's a nice guy, makes you feel very welcome and I was lucky enough to see him work on my stuff too - and he gave a running commentary whist he did it - excellent.

Don't get me wrong I have a MB tuned stage 4 175 conversion (bored out 150) which I ran with a 30mm PHBH and a clubman and it was spot on and which I'd still be running now if I'd not jumped on the £30 SR190 barrel bandwagon.
I like Mark and the lads at MBD too so I'd have no hesitation using their kit if I wanted one.

My scoot is a Tv175 ser3 in standard form except 42 clubman and li150 box, Tell you what, i'm itchin to give someone the go head to get the job done, so its more suited to modern day road speeds and get it run in for summer,
I'm not the quickest person when making serious cash purchases, but when i'm confident of the right choice i don't mind paying just don't want to payout unnecessarily ( needed spell checker for that one).
I wish someone would make the f.ckin decision for me as its drivin me up the wall.
just goin for a tablet...

Ran a Harry ported SR 185 with suzi piston (and added boost port), TV rod etc etc for 6hours non stop in a Spanish Enduro in 2008. It never missed a beat. Came 2nd in Lambretta class to an RB 22 !!
Changed the rings, exhaust and carb and did it all over again in 2009..........2nd again to the same RB 22 !!!!

So nippy, reliable and adaptable.
Whatever you decide just make sure you get it built right first time and I'm sure you'll be impressed.

I had a 175 Harry Barlow set up and later upgraded to the GT, it's the second one I've had. The HB is good for the money but the GT is better and worth it if you can afford to go that little extra, it does what it says on the tin ;) . Have a look here for more information...
