rebuild issues need help!

hello all i have just finished a rebuild on my ts1 and cannot start it for love nor money :evil:. now i have good healthy spark and petrol getting everywhere it needs to get to. done all the usuals cleaned carb changed plugs etc but there is a couple of things playing on my mind. firstly i changed the reeds from metal to two stage ones but i cant see that being the issue? and also the scooter had the same fuel from about 1 year ago so i emptied that out and put fresh in but dont know wether the tank is contaminated. i really dont understand it normally there is something amiss and it can be rectified but im out of ideas so PLEASE HELP!.

Did you remove the original Reed Stays when you fitted the dual stage reeds?

er no :? is this the issue i know they come with a little plate to retain them but i used the reed cage instead?

It will probably slow the reeds reaction to the changes in pressure from the crank case as it puts more load on the back of the reeds, it might not be the cause of the non starter but it might be adding to your problem...
I did try the original Yamaha stays on mine when I first fitted them, but found that the short metal strips helped the performance more than the original stays when I swapped them...
Also check which way up the reeds sit so that they best rest against the face of the reed block, Mine were best in one position and lifted a little way off the reed block if fitted the other way up. This also helped make my scooter start a little easier..

Might be somthing else thats causing your problem, wait and see what advice is offered before stripping things down.

thanks j1ms this has got me thinking when i put the 2 stage reeds in they would not sit down into the reedvalve they were catching the lip of the reedvalve with the little screws that retain the reeds so i used a dremmel and put little and i mean little half moons in it so the screws cleared and yes it did sit better one way more than the other just got a feeling that the reedblock is my issue(at the time i was not convinced i had done the right thing) oh well back out there tomorrow and see what happens

yes plug is definatley getting wet as i have had the thing out about 30 times today :cry: :D

What Carb are you running and what are your settings

the carb is a vhsa 32mm flatslide with 55 slide
needle something 7(sorry cant remember)
40 choke jet
145 main
needle clip in top slot
the carb was on the engine for the last 6 years before top end detonated so i assume it couldnt be to far out never had issues with the carb

I don't know about reeds etc. BUT I had a godawful fight with my trike yesterday - wouldn't start for love nor money (I keep the trike in the garage). Plenty of petrol getting through, a nice spark when held outside against the frame. What was wrong with it?? It was too cold for it to do its thing. I put the spark plug on the cooker to warm the threaded end, on a low light mind, didn't need it red hot, just too hot to bear on your hand. Put it back on the trike - fired up first time. Ken.
