Re-corking clutch plates

What is the rare scooter?

could always try cork tiles ,there fairly thin and a constant thickness ,a craft shop may have something thinner

Would it be better to get the plates made in something better? Cork is a little old design (sorry).
I dont know what the stuff is but its certainly not cork on my race clutches.
My guess on an old machine they would last forever.

Thanks Mark. I had found a similar service from another such outfit, but as Tony says, perhaps cork is a bit 20th century.
Meanwhile, our kid took all the cork off his ali-plates in his Polini clutch in the PK and I wondered about getting these re-done. We think this was because it was a particularly cold day, so the oil was very thick, and the oil-way that delivered oil into the centre of the clutch basket was partly obscured by excess gasket sealant.
That's one to watch during the rebuild.
We'll it isn't that rare, really. It is just that he was told that the clutch plates were as rare as rocking horse turds. It's a Triumph Tigress.Muttley McLadd wrote:What is the rare scooter?

Easier and cheaper to buy new polini plates mate.

The plates in Googled search look like TWN Contessa type plates.

Sorry I missed that it was a Triumph Tigress. Is it the 175cc 2 stroke or the 250cc twin 4 stroke? I think both have different clutches. There is a very useful place in Birmingham called Vale - Onslow motorcycles. I have just bought a NOS fuel tap and an air filter for my 175cc Triumph Tigress. They are an "old school" dealer which may have just what you need. The spares telephone number is 0121.772.2062. They do mail order etc. I was well chuffed to get hold of an original NOS fuel tap as the corks on my old one were shot and it leaked fuel constantly.

Thanks Simon. You're a very helpful guy. Unfortunately, Onslow don't have plates for the 175cc 2 stroke engine.

Yup, I agree. Polini clutch plates aren't expensive, and I wouldn't have asked if this Tigress issue hadn't been on my mind at the same time. However, I imagine that answers to such questions makes people think about how they would overcome the problem, and this all helps fill that deep pool of knowledge (pun not intended).

It would seem that the 250 twin was the most popular and it was designed specifically for the Tigress/Sunbeam scooter. However I think the 175 two stoke engine was a derivative of the BSA Bantam engine, but I couldn't be 100% sure. It may be worth contacting someone at the Vintage Motor Scooter Club or the BSA owners club - I'm sure someone must know somewhere.
