Think some of the abuse he has got is pretty pi** poor to be honest. Its not big and it aint hard. Besides you notice that both the tuners mentioned have not uttered a word. Seems there unofficial mouth pieces have chosen to do so.....strange...
The name "knowledge" was given to him by his scooter mates 25 years ago.. we are all still learning and i am sure he was only ever trying to help, by giving his advice the way he saw it.

For those who dont know I actually get on well with Martin. He is a nice bloke.. however I feel this statement by him "Frankly, much of his innovation is driven by what his computer is suggesting." is very mis-informed, incorrect and a little insulting. I'm not Charlie's mouthpiece. He's big enough and adult enough to speak for himself. I'm speaking for me. Charlie is a good mate of mine sure who bailed me out of the s**t with racing and facilities a few years back. Now I dont want people believing he is simply crunching numbers. The tuners on here know thats untrue anyway as a computer can tell you this but in the real world its not quite like that.
I don't feel my response was harsh as Sean/Dan have said. But you cant go on a public forum and mis represent someone like this. This is not the first time this has happened.
Anyway.. enough of me. I suggest this gets locked now.

better to go back to the original subject rather than lock it as its still quite interesting to know about how the tech data is tranfered from theory to practice.
Richard Taylor seems very good at designing on cad then following through with good results for example. i know his gt kit is not the first choice for racing but its more of an r&d subject than a racing subject
Tony, its less about being right or wrong but more about bouncing ideas around then putting them into practice. You have always been a good contributor to this.....I bought a set of sava monsums as a direct result of your advice which are cosy in my kitchen mounted on new rims ready to go on in the morning.
It should be fun.

i like Buddah...
ok.. then I say either lock this one and get j1ms to repost or we all stop the jibber jabber and get back to what J1ms was asking.

ok.....no jibber jabber....
so come on....spill the beans

I cant win here can I ? If i say anything I get accused of being a mouthpiece... if I clam up I get slaughtered too (normally by sean I might add
So what I can say is that all the calculations he uses 4 stones and an abacus and he did all this while an egg timer was running. If he didnt do the calc within the time he'd give up.
Porting is done with a moulinex blender with a special mix attachment..
The written formula are placed in a bowl to which he blends up with half pint of milk and pours it (with a 2% mix btw) into a barrel of neat pure water and brings to the boil. Once boiled its simply poured into a Mugello barrel and left for 3 years. Afterwards hey presto.. silly horsepower.
As for the pipes... well... if you look in scootering he actually makes em in paper.. they dont last long but they are very light...this is the real reason behind the egt gauge... its simply to stop the paper pipe from igniting and nothing to do with any mad ideas of the exhaust gas temp.

damn....thought you had fallen for the trap for a momenttony wrote:![]()

aparently the yorkshire tuners read tea leaves for their port timings so charlie has moved into the tech world with the abacus

Well, it's good to see a bit of healthy debate, and it's nice to see that some people actually read to the end of my longer contrubutions.
I don't know Charlie, and he is fairly enigmatic, so perhaps I was wrong to imply that I knew how he worked, but I needed someone to illustrate the computer age of tuning. I know that he uses computers, because Tony told me he did. In fact Tony, you were the one who told me that computer based tuning was THE future. So, back to the offending line....
If I had a sophisticated computer programme that accurately reflected my previous experiments and complimented the results from the dyno and testing, I would use the programme to make changes to my engine within cyber-space. Now, if my programme told me, say, to lower the primary compression ratio, I would have to look at innovations that would allow me to do this within the rules.
So, the sentence could have been less person-specific, but this is how innovation can be driven by what a computer is suggesting.

Let me say first that I was not saying that Charlie was incapable of innovation without a computer, so I will clarify this sentence.Frankly, much of his innovation is driven by what his computer is suggesting.
