Ben gave a 2 page document on Abrasive damage to Kits, yes blaming the Stainless tank (even though this was washed out before being fitted to the bike) as the possible cause of the failure. He then offered a replacement new Barrel or a re-plate of the old one. My mate took the new Barrel at a cost of £100 and also took some petseal. I personally am still not convinced, and agree with the previous post that said the Barrel would be worn every where, wouldn't it? and yes until convinced I too think it's as good an excuse as any.
Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, buy another barrel
Have you checked the needle and needle jet for similar "Abrasive damage" as seen on the barrel, because all the "Abrasive" thats caused this damage has had to flow through the small aperture between these two items to enter the cylinder so I would expect the softer surfaces of the needle and needle jet would show even greater damage than the Harder Than Hard Stuff that the plating on the cylinder is made of...
Surely there is some residue present that's clearly visible in the fuel supply, mainly in and around the Carburettor and intake.. This then would positively confirm the presence of this highly abrasive substance that is claimed to have caused the demise of another RB Barrel.???

hello all

i have run a stainlees tank for three years, two on a ts1 and one on a rb with no trouble at all
yes i have stiped the engines down, i do this every year :(

the ts1 is ok no probs and the rb no probs, the trouble is they seem to suffer from the exhaust port warping and the inlet fingure being to small on ealy first issue barrels used with 60stroke cranks :?

the rb barrel in question is the second generation ,and i run a 60 stroke crank and mbd piston
is the piston the prob.is the ports the prob. is the crank the prob.is the barrel nick the prob ,the question goes on :shocking:
i have known several engines rb type to be destroyed.when they have cost over £2500 and the barrels have been tuned, does this help or does it course more probs with weak ports and lining
the barrel i have used is total standard part from the engine caseing matched to the transfer ports
mb piston
af crank welded
franspeed
tmx 35 and 1.3 squish and run it rich with augusto box no probs happy days ;)

I am just in the process of having a TS1 barrel relined due to wear caused by an abrasive substance in a stainless tank. The tank was jet washed out prior to use and appeared to be clean and free from debris. an in-line fuel filter was also used. The filter had clear signs of an abrasive within it. A second opinion was sought from a motorcross tuner who's exact words were "theres some shite in your fuel". I now seal all tanks prior to use!

Obviously you know what happened with the first of my 3 RB kits and I was asked about the stainless tank I was using.
Upon further investigation it became clear the tank wasn't the problem,so much so I'm still using it,but it is sealed.

Yes,it sounds like unsealed stainless tanks can be a contributory cause to some of the failures to the RB kits but there's got to be a more serious problem with these as I expect that someone has had a kit fail in a similar way but they haven't used a stainless tank.
I do not try to explain why I ride Lambrettas,
For those who understand, no explanation is necessary,
For those who don't, no explantion is possible.

I'm no expert, but I would say the majority of people I have talked to, with the exception of AF, are not going with the contaminated fuel scenario, saying that the Carb, reed petals, Piston etc would have been blasted with the contamination and not just the exhaust port. As to the reason why then, as I say I'm no expert, but I've heard a few reasons, Plating not as good from Airsal, oval bores, etc. I suppose it will become clearer with time. I myself vowed not to be a guinea pig any more after some crap new innovations and the RB is one I will still steer clear of, and I will stick with the TS.

No defiate reason then :? . Took my RB barral off tonight just to have a look, cant see any problems, plateing looks fine, bridges ok, still got two, thank god, but iam going to have the bore checked and have it replated while its off just to make sure its as good as it can be, its done 3,500 plus miles now, it wrecked a crank and a flywheel but the kit itself has been alot of fun and trouble free, regards.

take your rings off piston and check ring gap in bore...........if ring gap is excessive look at the rings more closely

and check that they are of a uniform depth all the way around............

you may find that they are far thinner on one side............
