Exhaust..?

Hiya folks. After the long "there and back" run to Brid last weekend... the standard exhaust that was donated by my brother finally gave up the ghost and is blowing from all orifices...! Now I am looking to replace the exhaust and want something more... fancy..? I have seen a chrome expansion pipe that has an end can on it and stamped on the end can.. is "Sterling" I saw a couple for sale at one or two of the stands at Brid custom show last weekend. Thats about as much as I know about them... Has anyone seen them before does anyone run with one fitted...? Are they any good..?
My scoot is a Lambretta GP with a 186 kit... with a 22mm dellorto carb. I think I would be better off fitting another carb as well... as I would just a bit more from the engine.

Can anyone help...? Or give me some other options..?

I put a full stainless version on my 175 kited GP with a 22 jetex and it was a big improvement over the af big bore I had on then I fitted a 28mm Delly and it flew better top end 7mph more and lots better mid range power.
But if you get one check the welding inside the down tube as mine was bad and needed grinding out a bit lots wil say its just a middle of the road pipe but it went well on my lammy
Later on I lent a real PM pipe and it did not run as well mid range (the sterling is so they say a copy of a copy of a pm pipe mine was £99.00 from Nam but my m8 just got the black steel version from a parts fair for £79.00 with the same end can it also runs well on his 225cc

Cheers Lazarus....! Might just go for one afterall.. They are cheap enough. Welding aint a problem.. it can be ground back and rewelded if needed. The joys of being an engineer.. Just have to mess about.. even with new stuff.. lol. I like the idea of a bigger carb too..! :D


MIKE...! (my dear brother) Do you want you standard exhaust back now.... Its got a couple of holes in it... and it makes ya scooter loose power... But ya can have it back if ya want.... I wont be needing it anymore.. LOL :baddevil:

Very similar... except with a load more ground clearance

I modified mine to use a PM end can. This made it run sweeter, and sound better too!

Hi Lee Lee, the Sterling is a "revvy" pipe which allows the engine to rev further (if it has the power to do so), more fuel will help in this too so a bigger 28 or 30mm carb will definitely help. One major factor often overlooked with revvy pipes is gearing, if you run tall gearing it'll make it difficult to reach the revs where the pipe makes it's best power (unless you've got 30 bhp on tap), so with a small kit like a 186 (which one btw, SR, Imola, Mugello, GT, Casa??) it's best to keep the gearing low and no higher than 5.2 final drive (GP200 gearing).

Just to add to Corrado's advice, I had the experience where a 175 stage 4 and standard gearing with one of the ScootRS pipes meant I struggled to get 4th in anything by perfect conditions.

Went to an AF Clubman, and the difference in the power delivery through the rev range made a huge difference for touring.

I think that the ScootRS pipe is also a copy of the PM, making it quite revvy.

Just a thought, have you had a look to see if there are any second hand options out there, like a JL3 as an alternative to the Sterling. Nothing wrong with it, just less revvy. Or a Fresco knockoff from Siagon Scooters (20% off), which I think is more 'midrage' with the power delivery. (not totally sure on that count though).

And if you 'slap on' a different pipe before you get the new carb, think about your jetting, otherwise you might have a a holed piston.

New exhaust fitted....! Got it from my local dealership (Resurrection Scooters) in Burton on Trent. They let us have it for £100. Its actually a scootrs pipe.. fitting would have been okay if i didnt have to fit bigger studs.... as the originals had vibrated loose and stripped the threads. Oh well.... The joys of it all I guess. Anyway... Performance is greatly improved, not so much at the lower end of the revs, but ten times better mid range and top end. Im using a standard Dellorto 22/2. Must do some plug chops next time im out for a spin.... Or do I go for a bigger carb... If so.. which one...?
