As said on another thread,

Rev the $%$£" out of the scoot and using a strobe, check that the timing is at around 18 degrees. As the revs drop the timing should retard.

you really want to re time it from the start, check you have a true tdc mark. im never confidant doing this as there is a rocking no mans land at tdc and being blind as a bat i can never tell when the plunger this is still.

so i use a spark plug bith a bolt through it which gives a mark just before tdc then rotate the other way and get a mark just after tdc. exactly between the two is tdc.

using a timing wheel mark 18 degrees then a series of dots with a fine tip marker in 1 degree increments until 25 degrees. there is a way of measuring it too with a ruler but i have never used this method so dont understand it.

chances are you will already be at 18 degrees so you need to advance to say 23 degrees. fit the flywheel and strobe it. at low revs it should be at about 23 ish then as you rev it it should retard to 18. its the 18 or lower that you are after so that when flat out you are safe.

correct me if ive got it arse about face anyone :? .......i always forget which way the flywheel spins and have to look at the arrow....so anything is possible. thankfully its a once every 5 years event for me, im in the 5th year zone though.

23 degrees is standard for a small block but the muggy probably requires 18 or so. the augusto lets you bumble around at the higher degree then when its thrashed it goes safer.

dont forget its the retarded possition that counts......the advanced one is determined by the box so adjust it untill you are happy with the retarded one then check that there is no pinking and check your plug.

no, as the revs rise the timing will retard.
you run the most advanced at lower revs, then play it safer when the engine's spinning more.

possibly because when you buy one you are advised that a. instructions can be found here http://replayscooters.piczo.com/?g=37913680&cr=2 and b. that either Replay Scooters or JB Tuning provide free technical support.

Like most specialist parts you are advised to have the unit fitted by a compitant person and no disrespect to lee but he obviously doesn't understand it yet.....or probably does by now.

most tinkerers understand ignition timing and advance and retard, its something you test during servicing a car to ensure the vacume control still works.

its been on vehicles since the turn of last century, bikes used to have a second choke style lever so you would adjust the advance and retard from the bars as you ride. :ugeek:

Didnt only the 4 strokers have a mechanical advance retard? Or did early 2 strokers have it but used it back to front as they hadnt realised pipe technology at that point?

interesting question, i dont honestly know as im not really a two stroke fan but like old bikes like suicide shift harleys (foot clutch and hand gear) that had them.

old villiers two strokes had automatic advance and retard i believe but im not sure if the stone age ones had the manualy operated ones.

time to google.....
