Just changed the front sprocket on my muggy 186 from 16t to 15t but I noticed the chain is so worn that the nylon top tensioner now misses the chain by about 10mm  In fact it rust touches the casing :o

The only spare I had was just as worn so I put it all back together until I can get round to ordering a new one. My question is, will it do any damage? should I ride it as it is?

I have been out on it today to see what effect the change in gearing had had and as predicted (thanks Diablo and Capt Caos) and I'm well pleased with the result, pulled well 2 up up hill and into the wind 8-)

If you've changed from 16t to 15t (assuming 46 crown) you've gone back to standard primary drive.
With 16/46 a stretched (worn) chain is necessary.
With 15/46 a stretched chain is undesirable. If it is touching the casing, it will grind bits of ally off!

Yes Dags, it's now back to the standard 15/46, I realise that metal to metal contact will cause some wear to the casing, I'm just worried about breakages :o I'll get another chain, it's just that I probably won't get a chance to change it for a few weeks but want to still use the scoot.

you're welcome to come and get one, or I can drop one over when next passing.

Up to you Colin
