Off topic a little more but I wonder what happened to all the racing vegas? I bet they are all stashed in peoples sheds somewhere.
I have to say I'd like one, one day. I rode one a few years ago and loved it. Very very light and mega potential to upset people with one of them.
I'm thinking ally barrel..long stoke etc ;)

So only 7hp max. Is this good for a vega? Are they a nuisance to get power from? Reason I ask is that I've been asked to look at one for tuning and I'm not going to say yes if i'm hitting my head against a brick wall.
Our dyno reads bang-on the same as Diablos....

Not sure if they are a nuisance to get power from or not, im not a Vega fan (sorry Dave!!) :D I've never tuned or built a Vega, so had no idea what power to expect. Dave built his own engine, after Mick tweaked the ports, our brief was just to sort the jetting.

I have to say though, that there is an easy 1hp or so still available from jetting adjustments, and that's keeping it within the 12.7:1 range, but i wanted to keep Dave rich for rallies and varying weather/temp conditions etc......safety first!! ;)

Also, im sure there would be a lot more power to be had with a better pipe on, i understand both Sean and Mick have specs for a pipe that works with the tune that Dave has.........so i guess its upto Dave whether or not he wants to get more power or not.

Like i say, i've not worked on a Vega, so i'm just speculating here, but i'd say this particular engine would stretch to around 12-14bhp with the right pipe/carb/jetting combo, but we just did the best we could with what was put on the dyno on the day.

Any other Vega boys out there had their scoots dynoed to give a BHP comparison??
danstarstreams homebrew tzr 130 with cut up simonini pipe was 8bhp on jb tunings dyno.

a smallframe reed kit will go on a vega or starstream. its been done in italy and i think chiselspeed offer to do it for anyone wanting to go faster.

the hard part is that starstream webs are needed and they are megga rare, its a shame as the vega is a nice fun bike to ride but painfully underpowered as standard

I followed the progress of a Vega Martin did not so long back. A black one with 'big pipes please wives' on it I think :)

Same pipe as Daves but he converted it to reed with the boost port etc. He said it transformed the engine and gave it loads better low to mid range. Was doing somewhere near 11.5-12HP in your figures if I remember right. It was also fitted with a bigger front sprocket specially made for Chisels, could have been a 15? :? Don't know whether thats right or not but anyway they have bigger front sprockets for them.

Its funny all this talk about Vega's

Im at present finishing of a Tuned vega myself. just got top end really to finish.
Plus put a electronic igniton on it, & source or design an exhaust.

Manage to get 4 speed starstream crank from a restro job bought job lot just for crank

J barrell rebored honed for TZR piston with 360 deg timing holes in, boost ports,
Transfers opened at base and into barrel + re angled
Got a LTH reed block which im going to use 28-30mm carb. Keeping track length down

Porting more or less done just final cleaning and checking etc.

Cut down and modded ser3 15 tooth front sprocket for single chain.

When complete I want to take it down a sprint strip one way
Then pick up the peices on the way back which have fallen off

Basically I want get as High into the 70's as I can
If its made of Metal Fettle it !!

That'll be Dave Maudson's Vega you're on about Adam.
Reed valve,electronic, 28 or30mm carb and a Kegra pipe (I think)
Dave reckons it's as quick as a TS1 off the line !
You might catch him on a Thursday night at the Original Oak in Headingley - ask him how much Martin talked him in to paying for the NOS seat on it.

Finally got out for a dry run yesteray :D :D after getting it warmed up i chose to go on the back road called Pennypot Lane, it has quite long stretches slightly up hill and where i took it before Micks tune work etc. Before i struggled to get 50mph driving alongside the Mrs in the car ( i think my daughter has it on her phone) and the speedo bouncing all the time. Yesterday on my own i wound it up and the speedo was all the way round, past the miles counter and further probably back to it's resting place at standing. What my speed was i dont know but i'll do another with the car to get a better speed readout and also see if i can get my daughter to video it on her phone. First results are blinking great, but that could just be my own foolish thoughts ;) ;)
