Mick, very impressed with your work on that cylinder. What would be the cost for the same tune that you have done on that one? I appreciate that its a cast cylinder, so lots of tough work and time to be put in, but just trying to get an idea of overall cost.
Hi Dapper Thank you for your comments :D
The 150 barrel that I have done for Dan is at the moment an experemental project we have not tested it out yet for performance or reliability also I only had a STD piston to work of which have the ring pegs facing the ex port side it didn't matter where I put the new ports in relation to the ring pegs.
once that we have tested the barrel and if all is OK I will start to do more of these mods there will probably be slightly diferant shapes to the new port windows depending on the piston's that will be used , even better if any one is thinking of running with a reed valve conversion I can do more to a cylinder .
For a full tune with extra ports ( better if you have a reed conversion ) + open & match the crank case to the barrel + match the inlet manifold to the port, it will cost £140 +post
all I would require is your barrel, piston inlet manifold & bare crank case

Cheers
Mick

so what pistons have you been looking at ? as most decent 57mm pistons have a 15mm pin and the ones with 16mm pins ie dt125 have windows, unless your gonna weld them up

The good thing about Jap pistons is that they are available in big oversizes, alot of 56mm pistons go upto 58mm in Prox and other makes.. so maybe there is a little more choice than first appears... I would like to know what you decide on in the end... :P

Guys' i still haven't been out on the road yet to check anything, the weather is p155 poor when i'm home with the time :(
It's funny that when you ask about tuning these machines very little comes back in the way of advice. I know they raced them back in the day but getting any spec info is almost like those days never happened. I'm all too happy to pass on my jetting details even though i've paid to get this far, some are less willing. I dont know if 9 HP is an achievement no one with Vegas is letting on, the pipe i have on is i believe an old race pipe from the 80s and rare so i think it's the way to go. If i wanted to throw endless pots of money at something most people laugh at i suppose now i'm working again i could, but what am i going to achieve a fire breathing road eater with p155 poor brakes and suspension like a pogo stick that no one would want when i'm done.
The vega i have has a Starstream 125 barrel and engine internals and standard machines throw out 5.8 BHP at 5300 rpm.
A standard Vega 75s gives 5.2 BHP at 6300 rpm
A standard G.P 125 7.3 at 6200 rpm
150 G.P 8.7 at 6300 rpm
200 G.P 11.7 at 6200 rpm
I understand these bike may have a greater top speed than a vega, but have better brakes, suspension etc.
I know Dan has done what he can and will make any adjustments needed, perhaps the further tweaking may be safe. Mick also has done what he thought right and with a customer follow up like you have never known, he really cares about his work and keeping his customer happy i would recommend them both anywhere. ;) ;)

Dave (Thackers) if you are after some more info on tuning my friend Rob in Knaresborough has a Chiselspeed tuned Vega. That has the KH400 piston in too. He's not run it for a few years now, although, in pre dyno days and has never had a run I think; it was still a very quick bike.
I think Martin made the pipe for it too.

I've got his contact details if you want them?

The good thing about tuned engines, is the same BHP figures can give totally differing power bands on the road.... I don't think this is the finished article yet as you will probably like most others, continue to tweak it as it runs... making it put that power down as best as it can on the tarmac.... and with Mick and Sean in the background I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't leave a few people a little stunned... power to weight ratio comes into the equation with such a light scooter.... 9 HP wont feel too slow especially with standard brakes

robs vega was bought from nick evans in ripon.........
it WAS originally chisel speed built...........
however.......it was modified by me when rebuilt for nick..........
many alterations were made along the rebuild..........including some to the ex as i remember..............also port timings.........comp ratio etc..........
i have already given to dave some of my notes relating to this machine in the hope that it may help with future mods.........
it was then the following spec.........
26mm amal.......on yam 200 reed block............kh400 piston in ported barrel with boost port added.............
sorry to sound a bit vague..........but it was a long time ago and a lot of my build spec notes have been lost or misplaced...........
i will of course give dave more info .......if and when i can find it................ :D

Yeah I've always found that odd too. You would of thought people would be happy to talk about such things what with no one exactly racing them anymore but thats the scooter scene for you. I've always found it to be a strange mix of very helpful people but very clichey and closed up when you mention certain subjects.

I love the fact that you have tuned you Vega and stuck in on a dyno. I have kinda of stage four tuned mine and will stick on a Chiesel speed pipe once its chromed. Maybe one day I will stick on a dyno too and we can compare notes! :)

Sorry for going off topic slightly

having had time to think this over.........i remember that in its original chisel speed spec....................it was either all or nothing.........if you know what i mean........
it was far too peaky............and really not user friendly.........
i,m pretty sure that it was originally built for a guy from leeds.........i cant remember his name now.......but he was mad on vegas...........but more to the point ,he was only 8 stone ..............
the tune/set up from chisel probably was perfect for him.............but for nick it was quite bad
being 13.5 stone...........
which is 5.5 stone heavier..........
and so the mods i made were to improve torque/mid range power........
and i,m pretty sure that the exp chamber was altered in tuned length by approx 1 inch or so to accomodate this................... :D

This must be a common occurrence.... As I use to keep a record of barrels I had ported, a small note book with a few pages with barrel details port timings in millimeters height over port, type of barrel, barrel identification marks, bore size, clearance, head used, compression ratio.... just about all the details needed to replicate any barrel that I had ported from 1982-1989.... But in 1985 and 1986 I had two little daughters... That by 1990 both liked to colour-in and make paper planes.....Well there was not alot of details left that could be put back together... by 1991, I had stopped numbering barrels as I had lost count of where I was up-to.... and unless I had a scrap of paper with some working out on it that I had kept by chance, I couldn't say exactly what I had done to a barrel... so now and again someone says Ive got one of your barrels and tells me a number, I always wonder What the hell it is....but a few details are intact but not much... Kids, don't you just love em... :baddevil:
