The TMX35 does have the addvatage when it comes to clearence issues but i do think we over do it when it comes to carb size on road bikes, if a 30mm TMX is big enough for my RB230 to drag 15 stone on a series 2 at speed and according to the dyno, be rich enough all through the rev range at the same time, then 30mm should be big enough for most of us :D , watch it go bang now  .

PHBH 30... for the next one I build. They are easy to set up, flow good air... plus there are loads of setup details already available and spares are cheap...

Six post up from your question ;)
cezeta wrote:a number of tuners have dynoed them back to back with no power loss but the 30mm is said to feel quicker as the responce at lower revs is better. lazy tuners say its hard to set up but b race hope to be machining some needles to fix the step between jet to jet like a dyno jet kit.

Yeh too true pal, had good results with these....and had good horses from SPACO's.......

The OKO's look the part but had mixed messages from people that have had them-Retailing at £49.95 they seem a good value. Also a great size for full panels.......

Hmmmmmm thanks for the replies chaps, wish the Mikuni was a bit smaller in body! (not really wanting to change manifold as have loadsa AF ones and its been matched to V-Force) ;)

Anymore info/pics etc much aprecciated. :D

I just rebuild my TS1 from a 225 to a 230 using a 60mm crank. I do use a Mikuni 30mm with the pj blocked of and have no issues. I had a TMX35 before and felt no powerloss changing to a 30mm. Also no problems with the std needle.
But again, as before with the 35mm, I run with much smaller jets than most of you....without holing piston or pinking. A lot smaller meaning 250 main......

I'm reading a lot about this sanding down needles.
And yeah ok it will work but bloody ell. with a dellorto its all there for you. What happens when the needle wears.. you cant just go buy a new one. "i'll have a mikuni needle with a bit of sanding please"..
Shopkeeper.."sorry we dont keep those".
You'd have to measure every section of the sanded needle and try to replicate it with a new one. A lot of grief I reckon.
This seems a very hit and miss way of trying to sort the mikuni issue.

sanding down is one thing but i think the idea is to do what dynojet do in the states and fine tune the needle. ive done bikes before witrh dynojet kits and the needles tend to be more stepped representing the crossover from jet to jet.

the jap carbs are much better its just they are not supported as well at the moment. lets face it the scooter scene think its a good idea to use ducati electrics, try telling a bike rider that

my ts1 started life in 96 with a kein carb from a motocross bike but nobody would go near it so i went for a delorto to then have to use a needle from another carb and have it shortened to get it bang on.

modifying individual needles is not a good idea but finding other needles that fill the caps or machining them to a sertain defined size is normal as is drilling jets to half sizes ect.

having said that i hate anything to do with carbs, id rather pay someone else to do it. :?

Have tried a few things with carbs differant needles and stuff over the years but it's sort of what had to be done. Ther were no dyno centers available but that didn't stop me trying to fine tune a carb to run a little smoother. TZR Steve back a few years trying to make more of his 26 mm Amal. He made his own power jet system for it, but for this he made a new two piece bellmouth so it didn't need the rubber fuel line that sat round the bell mouth on the larger Amals. When the power jet was running the mid jetting could be leaned off and air speed would upjet the higher revs once the correct power jet size was chosen. But as I remember the needle that came with that carb wasn't perfect for fuel delivery low down so Mikuni needles and dellorto needles were tried it's more a matter of getting the correct air fuel, as the needle that works on one may be rich on another. I tkink he ended up on a single taper Mikuni needle in place of the Amal needle ( Amal only supplied one needle for the two stroke 26 carb)

I'm fed up with seeing the heat spike on mine using Mikuni carbs, I tried a TMX30 which resulted in a holed piston and so I re-fitted the TMX35 that I'd previously used and this too is giving a serious heat issue, so is the PHBH the ideal solution for a TS1 as I believe it was designed to run with a 30mm Dellorto, but which one? :?
