Just to finish this off in case anybody ever has the same issue, changed the 0.75mm clutch shim to a 1.2mm shim and it clears the problem.

Hi Ove, just had exactly the same problem
, just another possible solution to using a thicker shim, with mine it was just the ears of the circlip causing the problem so I just put a bit of a chamfer on the ears with a dremmel. No effect on the integrity of the circlip and gave enough clearance for the crownwheel. I'm guessing it was an aftermarket crownwheel, mine was

No worries minority, mine was AF road cassette with a GT endplate. It was possibly the circlip ends sticking up slightly as you said.
