Thanks for clearing that one up, I was wondering what he meant by "offset rear brake".
We had no end of problems with Italian brake shoes, we had to return over 200 sets back to the manufacturer to have the brake shoes skimmed down to the correct diameter.
Offcourse everybody assumed the Scooters India 200cc crankcase and the rear hub drum were at fault when it turned out the brake shoes were wrong.

i know of 4 (complete) engines where the cam-drilling is out of true.
really bad production standart.
on my new engine i also had problems with the rear brake.
could not put a hub on. after some hard work with a quality brake-shoe skimming tool, the brake is ok. can be out of true on my engine also, but works now....and thats it.
after changing the bearings and the crank, the chain guide and skimming the brake shoes,
its a good engine and i am quite happy buying one.

I can confirm what Paul says I remember talking to Paul just prior to taking delivery of the new engine cases saying how much effort had gone into getting the machinary back in use and getting these made...SR_Lambretta wrote:The reason why we sold the 200cc casings so cheap before, was because all the other UK and European dealers were buying casings direct from Indian Exporters based in India in small batches of between 10 to 50.
We were supposed to have the exclusive on the 1,000 casings, with a new batch for 1,000 casings every 2 years, but as usual SIL decided to sell the casings to everybody else. So we had to sell the casings at cost price to compete.
Now that the Indian Exporters price has doubled, we can now sell our casings at a more realistic price and still be cheaper than other dealers.
"offset rear brake" story, can you explain, I have never heard of this before? There's always been rumours and backbiting around casings where some companies try to scupper others sales . . such as the "offset rear brake" story which I believed because they are . . until I realized it's std innocenti as the original Italian casings are the same

Then seeing paul at Kettering selling his cases that were supposed to be "exclusive" and there were several people selling engine cases that Paul hadnt supplied.... Even a German lad turned up the next year selling them... Paul had payed all the money to get the machines running again and they had made them for anyone & everyone... Paul, (as I remember it) wasnt impressed... To say the least...

I had a hell of a problem with my back brake..ended up putting a 1mm washer under one of the pads clip that pushs on and that made it come on square (chalk method) then fitted 1 of martins cables and to be honest its the best lammy back brake Ive had..lockman69 wrote:My engine came from Paul @ SR and its been great, however i have tried 3 different makes of brake shoes and 2 different rear hubs and i have never been able to get the rear brake to work well![]()

I did ask Scooters India to look into the problem with the rear brake shoes locating pins and the rear brake cam, and after several tests they said that they could not find anything wrong with their machining.
Perhaps it may be the odd casing that seems to have this problem with the problem being made worse by the un-finished both SIL and Italian brake shoes.
It can be extremely frustrating dealing with Scooters India at the best of times, with some orders taking up to a year, sometimes a 2 years to negotiate and manufacture the items involved.
At this present moment we are having a batch of SIL GP200 crankshafts manufactured with Japanese IKO big end bearings fitted instead of the SIL big end bearing. These crankshafts have taken 2 and half years from when Scooters India agreed to do it back in December 2006 with several price changes and me having to arrange the delivery of IKO bearings.
Dealing with Scooters India can be an enormous headache.
