Idle emulsifier

I'm trying to set up the idle on a VHSH 30 flatslide as the 60 pilot fitted as standard is far too rich and have ended up with a 37 at the moment.I've emailed Eurocarb for advice regarding the emulsion tube that is fitted before the pilot but not received a reply yet and have spoken to a well known tuner who could offer no light on the subject. The emulsifiers I have are B48 ,B62 and a CD1 but none of then seem to alter much so have removed and just run the pilot but even on a 37 I have to have the airscrew nearly all the way out but at least the motor isn't as rich as when the tubes are fitted.Anyone have any info on them?

CD1 is the standard fitted and does not limit the flow, rather, it allows the pilot to be the limit. It is very common to use just a numbered emulsifier tube, which limits rate of flow, or to use one with a big pilot... but the emulsifier will still be the limiting factor, e.g. if you fit a 60 pilot with a B48 the '48' is the equivalent of a 48 pilot.

It is quite normal to run a CD1 with a 35-45 pilot for these carbs so I'm not surprised that yours is running rich, even with the B48 emulsifier tube. I personally find that the CD1 and correct size of pilot is the best way to dial these in.

There are also 2 lengths of pilot available for these (short head or deep head) but either work fine.

Thank you for the reply Adam , the carb had a B fitted from new so I tried the CD1 from a 34 carb that had a 36 idle and originally came off a TS1 so maybe I'm in the ball park.Logic says that a pilot in the 30's sounds small but obviously the motor says otherwise, certainly a PHBH would need a jet in the 55-60 range on the same motor.

I've just had a look through my little black book and found that my 3 setups on VHSH, VHSA & VHSB are 38-40 pilot with CD1 emulsifier, however, another pal has 40 with CD1, whilst another pal has as high as a 45 with CD1 on his VHSH. (NB: all dynoed bikes)... ooh, just found another 40 + CD1 and a 35-38 + CD1 setup (again, dynoed)

I also have a number of setups from other people listing 60 pilot but used with B45 emulsifier, which simply is a fitted BIG pilot to flow correctly to the B45... the 45 being the limiting factor.

Please don't just go banging in a 35 + CD1, running weak and then damaging your engine but don't be afraid to start with a CD1 and 40-45 for testing, which will see you start slightly richer for testing, then reduce and retest.
