bearing in mind the timing light is only as good as the timing marks.

On one engine we used the positive stop method for the timing marks then used the timing light .....all ok.

The engine was consequently stripped and rebuilt, set the timing with a dial gauge and confirmed with timing light.........timing nearly 4 degree out compared to the positive stop method

I would always recheck timing marks after a rebuild. I am staying with the positive stop method but I always adjust the stop and check it 3 times before finally scribing on the mag housing.
Timing light is the only way to go because I like to watch how the engine is working as I rev it.

Anyone experienced a timing light not working. I set the timing on a friends scooter and connected my timing light but it would not work. I so thought it had broken but connected up to both my 2 machines and it worked perfect, reconnected to his and still no go. I wondered if it was a special plug lead stopping the signal. The scooter ran ok so I left it at that.

I've done the school boy error before on a mates scooter and clipped the strobe on the HT lead upside down ie backwards and wondered why it wasn't working.

I did not realise you could get it wrong. I checked but the design of my clip on strobe makes it difficult for me to clip it on a Lambretta wrongly.

There should be a little arrow on the clip which points to the spark plug.
