Hi all, what sort of temperature should a EGT gauge be reading on tickover only? I've just fitted one but because my scoot isn't registered yet I can't get it out on the road to test its working. When my motor is running the gauge lights up but doesn't move off its lowest setting ( 200 degrees ). Any advice gratefully received. Thanks Pete.
Depends where in the pipe your sensor is but mine used to read around 230 to 250'C, and peak at about 450 to 480'C ish on a TS1 with a Franspeed race and 30mm VHSH carb, Augusto 6000 set at 24' static. Sensor approx 100mm from piston. Since then the spec of the motor has changed a lot and I haven't had a chance to run it yet.

Agreed, does sound like sensors not workingwack 63 wrote:Take sensor out of exhaust and heat up the tip with a flame from a burner etc and watch the gauge.

Mines reads between 190 and 200 on tick over but yours should rise instantly when you rev it.

The gauge I'm currently using doesn't start reading until 200 degrees either, up until that point it flashes and toggles between DC Voltage and 20. Until it's completely warmed up it drops out of range at 30 mph as well. Reads up to between 500 and 600 when out on the dual carriageway.
Good advice about using a blow torch to test the prob but a lighter or a match won't be hot enough

I've got a blowtorch somewhere. I'll heat the sucker up with that.
