It should be possible to remove the inner and insert a new one without the outer cable springing free. Therefore, yes there should be a recess for the ferrule. how much metal is there where the inner wire goes through the headset? If it isn't deep enough to drill a recess you could maybe drill it out to take a cable adjuster to hold the outer in place?

I've ordered a new housing. It's the earlier type as I'm going to weld it to avoid sloppy gears. This one does have a recess but it was very small and shallow. I've drilled it slightly bigger and a bit deeper and the cable fertile now fits. I'm finding more and more stuff needs fettling these days. I've also bought an 'easy clutch' device. I'll put it all back together tomorrow afternoon and see how it goes. If that doesn't resolve it I'm seriously thinking of selling both my Lammies. I'll report back in a day or two. Thanks fellas.

So I've fitted the new gear housing ( with the usual fettling ) and ran new inner and outer cables to an easy clutch device. I've mounted it to the cable adjuster block as per photo. I think this gives me the straightest cable run avoiding any big deviations in the routing. It should also make clutch cable changes relatively easy. I now have a genuine one finger clutch. I'm not sure if it's the housing combined with the easy clutch that's solve my stiff clutch issues. I'm going to remove the easy clutch and just try a new inner and outer clutch cables and see if it was the housing causing my problems. Either way I'm now happy with the outcome.

I got it from eBay mate. They are used a lot on older type trials bikes I believe.
