V55/5 form.

Hi all, I need some help with my V55/5 form please. I'm at the stage of filling one out and getting a number plate for my GP. I was under the impression ( wrongly ) that a 1978 bike would be tax exempt. I've filled the form out but how do I apply to tax it? I thought the form was just an application for a number plate and once issued I could apply for the tax then. Any advice very welcome. Thanks in advance Pete.
