Battery going flat

Ill give the multimeter a go, how do you mean by wire it in series?
Unplug the + or - from the battery with the multimeter on that plug and the battery?
Ive already fitted and connected up the relay but I guess that I can unplug the wire from the battery

Yes, that is what you do but bare in mind that most meters require you to plug the red positive lead into a different hole on the meter in order to measure amps, sometimes 2 separate amps hols are available in which case start off with the highest amperage and if you get a very low or tiny reading drop down to the lower amperage range. DON'T forget to put the meter lead back in the voltage/resistance position when your are finished or you will blow a fuse next time you use it
