Home boring/honing

After years of dropping bits off at at various 'specialists' for re-boring/honing, and them never meeting the timescales promised,
which means rebuilds are delayed yet further

It was a welcome relief to find this chap on youtube that shows these can be home done jobs.
Not knocking guys like Simon at 'B' race etc, but with a few hours work, and some home brew tools, it is now possible to complete these jobs at the home garage

Shaun, see if you can get ahold of Rhys on smallframes. He got me a tool from his company a few years back that's considerably better than a few placcy spoons with a bit of wet and dry pasted on.

I laughed at the swarf from the "cutting" process. But the spoons are creative. To de-glaze bores I have uses a piece of emery cloth in a hacksaw slot in a 1/4" rod in an electric drill.
Then again I have also squatted inside a cylinder with a 4" grindstone on a flexible shaft. to remove the lip so the piston can be removed from the top.

This must be the same guy that half of the dealers send their work off to, judging by some of the barrels that I've had done. Thankfully, there are some excellent UK dealers though that must sub it out elsewhere or do it well in house.

This method works well, but where he's on about not overheating the barrel, he's fighting himself by using paprika as a cutting compound. Much better to use cucumber paste. And using a tennis ball is also a 'fault', as they are now designed to go much faster than they used to be. Again, and it's just my preference, much better to use a hamster, and feed it until it's correct bore size. Simon.
