Hi,
changed my rear hub seal and put it all back together (Eibar Jet200). I found I had to go down from a 1.85 shim to a 1.6. When I was trying different shims and I had the plate on and off a couple of times. The Sticky manual gives Indian and tighter MB torque settings. I tried both. I swear that it made a difference in the distance between the end plate and the shim. That the tighter MB setttings reduced the clearance. Is this correct? Anyone else notice this?
At this point I have been working in an unheated garage for a few hours and its below zero here. So I may have had a bit of hypothermia, but I am pretty sure I was not hallucinating.

Morning David, there's dedication, staying out that late to do it. Just to cheer you up now that you're freezing cold, a rear hub seal can be done from outside the engine

I only use the higher figure so haven't noticed a difference but would have said that it would not make a difference purely because the gearbox backplate 'lands' on the alloy casing, and you're not crushing the alloy, only forcing 'the wedge' tighter (think of threads as a wedge). [torque is set to provide "stretch" tension in the bolt/ stud shaft/ thread wall friction to maintain tightness and even pressure]. If you removed your layshaft, which it sounds as if you may have, and you've had to reduce your shim by 0.25mm I would be thinking something either not tight / seated enough (rear hub nut?), OR, now you've got it all back together in the freezing cold and come into the warm, the layshaft 'o' ring is between the shaft and the bearing. Sorry.

i`d agree with B-Race on this one the torque setting should not make a difference , did you torque the hub / layshaft up first as that could well make a difference ...........back to the garage

You're right. Last night I was too cold and tired to be thinking straight. My rear hub is on. I dont think I saved the rear hub bearing I changed last year. Stupidly I should have measured it and the new one. Entirely possible they would be slightly different. But thinking back, it was around the freezing mark and we have been working on the scooter for more than 10 hours. Notice a pattern here.
Thinking about it last night, I noticed that my two feeler gauges do not agree. I cant remember if I grabbed the same one when doing the measurements. Either way, will bin both as they were cheap, bought back when I had a lot less money to spend on tools. Will get a new one from a relative that suppliers the garage trade. I'll measure, lift the plate, reposition, torque down to MB settings, and see.

after awhile you just get sick of the winter so working on the scooter is some kind of protest, but my wife thinks I'm completely daft. Its not too bad as you can layer on a lot of clothes. We weak link in the plan is the tools and parts. So bloody cold on the hands. A summer project will be to put some walls up to create a small work space around the scooter bench that I can insulate and heat.
