The "law" says the vehicle must registered before 1973 for a black rear number plate to be legal......but i'm led to believe a vehicle can have a black number plate if manufactured before 1973 but registered after this date (ie 1976). Is this correct or will I be looking at prison if I ride with a black number plate on a 1976 Lambretta (frame archive says 1963).

I don't think Plod is looking for these things anymore judging by the amount of cars with silli fonts on their plates, bikes with black plates and bikes with postage stamp plates.

Why has a '63 got a '76 plate?
Did you have to do that?

Depends what your v5 states as year of manufacture, if it states '76 then you should be on black & yellow.

Agree with digdug, loads of illegal plates kicking around, some even dispayed on dashboards......some days i wish i was a traffic cop, i'd be a right b@5t@rd ;)

As Barnsleybilly says, if on the v5 as manufactured is prior to 73, then a black plate is legal, but expect to be pulled. If you can prove (with paperwork) it's of '63 manufacture through "The Lambretta Board" , The Lambretta Archive or LCGB (By frame number) it is possible to re-apply and get a non-transferable, age related plate for it!! :P

I'm assuming the scooter was first registered in the UK in '76 but was a used import. A search of the frame number comes up as 1963 ? I'm guessing that year of manufacture information was not as readily available in the 70's and the DVLA may have not have been as concerned about providence as they are today.

A possible explanation: Back in the day (1971) I bought a pile of parts which was mostly TV175 but with a frame sold as scrap from the local Lambretta dealers. The registration number 313 JJH actually belonged to a S2 Li150 but had morphed into what I bought via a 'triggers New Broom' process. Role forward to 1980, I'm now married with a child and a new mortgage and decided to put the scoot back on the road. In a fit of lunacy, I thought that as I was now a 'responsible adult' I would declare the changed frame and engine number.......big mistake, local licensing office in Ipswich insisted in sending someone to be inspect it and he declared that as there were no major components (none actually) from the original bike it would have to be re-registerd and that was that, registered as TV175 with an X plate  ffs

When I got my GP it was registered with 1978 plate although frame and engine were 1971 so a cert from LCGB and phone calls and other forms to DVLA got me an age related plate 1971, however until I managed to talk to someone who knew what he was talking about I was getting nowhere, it took 5 1/2 months to do it!
