Vespa clutches are a f$%^&*g nightmare. A complete swine to fit and a horror to adjust. Half a turn either way on the adjuster is the difference between slipping and dragging.
Meus Lambretta est non infractus. Is est quietus.

You may be right here. It did look like the outer wasn't in the correct place, albeit that it was only about 4mm. or 5mm. out. I managed to get a new clutch cable most of the way in (Lambrettas are so much easier in this regard) just before it went dark and I did establish that, with the clutch now disengaged, there is plenty of compression.
Hopefully, I'll have it running at the weekend

Good stuff mate , disagree re fitment and adjustment though,
Piece of p155 to set up , fit 2 trunnions , tighten up cable to the max then just slacken the last trunnion off a tad if too tight then move the first down.

Wouldn't know, but I imagine there is a lot more space as all the panels seem as if they clip on to the tubular frame.
If any of the cable outers are not butted up correctly, yes the cable will fray & snap pretty quickly.

I have found this way to tighten clutch cable the easiest way, It can also be done for the back brake.

I only mean that, with Lambrettas, cable inners feed a lot easier though than Vespas, in my experience. But then these are the original outers from 1973, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh 
Great minds. I did that with the cable ties too. But, of course, as my inner was clearly so near snapping at the headset end, it was never going to work

I always put grease on my inners.
I have to say that the quality of the original cable outers on this Rally, and on the inners (they are still the original gear inners, I'm pretty certain, but I'd previously changed all the other cables) is the best I have ever seen. They are quality items designed to last for years whereas most cable sets these days need completely stripping out after a couple of years.

Well with the clutch still disengaged, I put the flywheel back on and, after kicking it twice
, it burst into life
It didn't particularly want to tick over but then I had washed some petrol through the air filter to clean it (for the first time
) so there may be more air getting in. It is also making a sort of whishing noise I wasn't familiar with but I didn't have any cowlings on at the time.
