If you want to get a modern scooter then that's up to you, but don't expect to find a lot of friends to ride with unless they have similar scooters. Also don't rule out Indian GP's IF they have been well restored in this country, as the early ones are are every bit as as good as an Italian at a lot less money. I would start with your local club and try and buy something local. Your less likely to get ripped off. As already said £4k is a lot of money and should buy you a good scooter.

4k will buy you a very decent Ser 3, don't bother with a 125, look for a 200 engined one, might be an Indian engine, but not a lot wrong with that,

BTW. A basic 200cc cylinder kit, 22mm carb set-up and 16T front sprocket for your Li 125 should cost no more than £250 ish.

It is fairly obvious to me now that a 125cc is not going to be for me but with engine upgrades may be the way to go. I've read quite a bit about the Mugello upgrade but as I understand it, it is not just a matter of adding the new parts. A fair few other parts would need to be upgraded too (exhaust, carb, etc). This is all added cost plus the cost of having it fitted and set up (I have not got the knowledge to do it myself). I have been looking for something with these mods already done but not much on the matket. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places. Anybody have an idea of the cost of having these upgrades done professionally. Thanks to all for the help and advive up to now.

Have a look on this web site to give you an idea of costs when looking at engines. The owner is good and I would say costs are fair. Have a look through his site and that will also give you an idea of upgrades. There is also a thread on this forum (if you haven't already seen it) which shows the costs of building engines. Be warned costs can be high

Also if you do a search on eBay for what you would like then tick the sold button you're get an idea of what your money could buy you. Sadly eBay has become the measure people use to price their scooters and the local find at a good price has become rarer.

As others have said 4 grand is a good amount of money to find yourself something that would suit you. Personally a 125 engine with a 185 kit would be the way to go although price wise (because of learner laws) a 150 with a kit may be cheaper.

Scomadi have a problem with the 300's which I believe is to do with the 300cc engines or rather lack of them.
Midland Scooter Centre isn't to far from Coventry and they have the 50cc Scomadi's in stock. Might be worth a look.

I think you could get an italian bike with an sil200 engine in which would do what you need and give you more scope in the long run cc wise
