Built an engine on the bench, did the flywheel up hand tight thinking I would torque up properly when in the scoot, put engine in the scoot forgetting to tighten flywheel, and tried to start it, wouldn`t go straightaway but started eventually but didn`t run right, remembered just in time, checked flywheel and the woodruff key had almost sheared, lucky no serious damage to an expensive crank.

I can top that This happened back in 1971 during my first scootering phase. My bitsa TV175 developed a strange misfire on the way home form work so I put it on the stand in the drive and started revving the engine. Now back then I often rode without cowlings/rear runners/panels, so as I glanced down I though I saw the flywheel move out. Not sure, I gave it another handful at which point it (the flywheel) jumped straight off the end of the crank and dropped onto the toe of my boot It must have been spinning at about 5k RPM and after bouncing off my boot it shot off down the drive, across the road and bouncing like a Barnes Wallace bomb, skipped down the opposite drive and hit their garage door dead centre. It was embarrassing having to knock and ask it I could have my flywheel back but I was a bit more concerned about the pain in my toe and the fact that the fins on the spinning flywheel had 'milled' a hole right through the leather of my boot I'd only had then a few weeks as well
