Sorry to hijack your engine re-build thread Paul ;)
No problem, mate :D

Personally, I haven't found the standard suspension too bad. I quite enjoy going over potholes without feeling like my fillings are going to shoot out :o

Hopefully, I'll have the crank back tomorrow and start to make a bit of progress. Be warned though. The photos I took of the engine as I took it apart have been wiped from the camera. There may be some daft questions coming up in the days ahead :P

My casings are in very good condition. However, when I put them back together with a gasket do I need to be sealing the casings with something like? :

The only sealant I have in my garage is Stag Wellseal Sealing Compound which is the slightly treacly brown stuff. I use that on Lambretta cylinder heads. Could I use this?

Thanks, Baz. Next question. Am I correct in assuming that a Rally has 21 Uncaged roller bearings on the gearbox layshaft and not the 23 referred to in Haynes?

I have assumed that it is only 21 as I couldn't see another two fitting in. Anyway, I haven't yet sealed the casing just in case:

Two more questions please:

(I) I have a circlip left over which, I think, may well hold this seal in around the mainshaft. Before I go an waste a perfectly good seal, am I right and should I just press the seal in further?[*]

(ii) Common sense tells me I have the seals facing the right way in these pics. Can some one just confirm that for my sanity please c :D

[*] having now warmed up after a day in the garage, I recall what this circlip is. It's for the flywheel

Thanks, Baz.

I have since taken that mainshaft oil seal out and discovered that circlip does indeed sit in front of the bearing and behind the oil seal. That was the good news.

However, I also tried to fit the crankcase together with the ignition cam still on the crank, unfortunately. Result: another wrecked oil seal. That was not such good news :)

How many times do we try a short cut and it never works. I must have wasted hundreds of £'s being a lazy prick.

I know what you mean about short cuts but this was me just being dim. I felt resistance as I was trying to get the casing together

More Corteco seals on order (with spares this time) :)

I did realise that the gear pinion (see pic 1 above) was the wrong way round. Just in case anyone thinks I shouldn't be let loose with any Vespa engine ever again ;)

I think more like you're ready for the next one fully armed !

I've got a pk 135 to do this year - last time I did a small frame I was 16 so no doubt I'll be learning again .
