agreed.. each to their own...
my tuned iron barrels aint slow and they do a hell of a lot of miles, I don't agree that ali is more reliable than iron.
I honestly think that iron barrels got a bad name back in the day before the TS1 came out just because most where just not set up correctly. The people who went over to the TS1 back then mostly never tried another iron barrel.
Another thing people say about iron barrels is that its a pain in the arse that you have to run them in a lot more than an ali barrel, that's very true if the clearance isn't right for the piston/barrel/bore combination but not true if these things are done right. as an example, my new 250 that first turned a wheel last Saturday now has only 180 miles on the clock and last night with only 140 miles on the clock I held it at 76mph for about a mile and it didn't nip up, today ive rode it to work and thrashed it all the way there and back and it still hasn't nipped up.
What most people think about iron barrels is just incorrect.
I had a rebore on another iron barrel earlier this year that kept nipping up at anything over 45 mph, I had the bored measured and it was found to be bored on the p155, it was much tighter on one side of the bore than the other and tight at the bottom of the barrel. once it was bored out straight it never nipped up over around 5000 miles until it was running close to flat out on the M5 with a huge hole in the exhaust racing a certain loony, it nipped up due to the hole in the exhaust weakening the carburation too much, even after that nip up it still ran with the hole in the exhaust the rest of the way home (over 85 miles) at 70mph.
If I had been on an ali barrel that day, the motor would not have nipped up it would have kept running for a few miles longer and eventually holed the piston meaning I would have had to be recovered. see the piston in my avatar? that came out of an ali barrel not an iron barrel.
As you say though... EACH TO THEIR OWN
