Thanks guys and bristolmod for the great explanation. Two dealers have advised 17 deg BTDC so I'm going with that and see how it goes.

I like points on standardish scoots, I think they are under-rated. Dealers like Rayspeed, can put you a new condenser and points for not much money and 10 mins work to put them on properly.
If it's standardish with a regular 20 carb etc, I don't worry about setting the timming too low as you're not high revving. I go for something around 21-23, get it jetted properly and use half decent oil and you'll be okay.

Still trying to adjust points. Gapped em but opening at about 25deg BTDC when I move stator it's not making enough difference to get em set correctly I'm moving stator clockwise. Any advice please?

Own marks. Points double checked and correct. There was is an old mark at about 30 deg??? Strange. I'm just thinking, the points are in good condition but if the arm is worn would that make any difference or does adjustment offset any wear?
(My TDC MARK is about 1 o'clock position on mag housing)

Points set at 0.4 mm checking on visual but will try a bulb. looks like a few more hours in garage tomorrow. Really doing my crust In. Compression is good and new rings, new plug gapped correct, spark is ok and replaced coil and fuelling is ok. I can only see problem with timing.

Tiny adjustments to points gap will make big adjustments to firing point so close the points gap a fraction and then see if you can get the timing that you're looking for my rotating the stator.

I found similar issues to what you are describing and wonder if it is due to differences in the replacement points. There is talk of many being the Vespa type (e.g. early points P200) and that the cam might be a slightly different length, hence the need to have a slightly different gap to that originally needed with Innocenti original parts.

Best of luck.

Strobe it. Far more accurate than static with a lamp. You can get a decent strobe off E bay

Like this one which is exactly the same as the one I use.
