Which make? I've turned this into a 'Who wants to be a millionaire' question in my head n it's driving me nannas.
I was gonna take the plunge and get the variatronic but started thinking bout it and and the money involved and have got my nackers in a right twist.
It's funny but when you look at things price wise and try and convince yourself that if you buy cheap you get a cheap product that only last a season or two so go with the best you afford giving you the reliability and future proofing you should be paying for.
But the price diff between cheap and not so cheap is massive, it's driving me insane. I've no experience with electronic ignitions and no one to directly ask. Not normally indecisive, if I need it and can afford it and I've a plausible excuse for the wife then I'll buy it, but this is really giving me ball ache.
Plus I've also read a few down points now on the more expensive kits now.
What's the concenous here peeps, variatronic, mg, sil, or even eBay.
It'll be on a standard set up li150 and I intend to pop a sport clubman and new barrel next year.

I use a SIL 12v electronic ignition system,I've used the same stator and flywheel for over 5 years without a problem.I've heard some bad stories about the stator coils on the Variatronic ignition systems giving a lot of trouble,Its a personal choice,but it would appear that you dont always get the best by paying the most.john.kreelman wrote:Which make? For a standard Li150, I would go with a bog standard SIL stator and flywheel, together with static ignition setting. The Variatronic will give you better low down throttle response, but for the cost benefit, it will be wasted on a standard engine, but that's only my opinion.
But if you wanted to go with variable timing, such as the Variatronic would give, the more cost effective solution would be to fit an add on box to your SIL ignition system. I've tried the Augusto, MTech and the Ky-Tronik and all are OK, providing that you set them up correctly. But you will get the greatest benifit of variable timing if you have a tuned engine
SIL stators do fail, as do the more expensive ones, so there is no guarantee if you buy an expensive stator, so most of us carry a spare stator in our tool box. As for cost, Scooter Restorations sell genuine SIL stators, but I've bought allegedly SIL stators on Ebay for under £30 and so far no problem.
And finally, electronic ignition is the future, so go for it.

the only kit i've ever used in 30 years of messing about with bikes that has proven (for me) to be 100% reliable is electrex. as expensive as varitronic, but as far as i'm aware without the retard/advance feature. That said, I spoke to varitronic about 2 months ago and they said they were bringing out a new version about now that would have this feature.

Just got a BGM 120w stator and an Indian mid weight flywheel - worked out of the box, very nice quality for the stator and plenty of power!
