I used this principle back in the day, but the suck-blow of the carb caused the mesh to weaken (metal fatigue) and quickly disappeared. I had one that did a couple of thousand miles on an oko carb and right enough it appeared slightly concave at the end of its life, I never noticed any problem on the one that I formed to a hemisphere. The engine was a 200 gp so maybe it couldn't suck or blow hard enough to break one.
I run mine through the box but without the air filter. Keeps all the crap out..
