30mm dellorto disadvantage of fitting wire mesh under belmth

I've been running my GT 186 for a while now with a 30mm dellorto without a filter with full panelwork , performs really well and I don't want to use a remote foam filter bikes been dynoed I'm just concerned recently after riding on newly gritted road surfaces whether I should be fitting a wire/mesh gauze under the bellmouth with the bellmouth screwed down tight over it can anybody see any disadvantages or issues .

We went to Amiens this year and one of our crowd managed to get a piece of gravel jammed in his reed valve after we had ridden up a resurfaced road. Fortunately it didn't make it all the way through to the TS1 barrel

For me that was enough to justify my tea strainer filter that people laugh about !

You used to be able to buy short alloy bellmouths with the gauze from Contact Developments , now Eurocarb, in the 80's but not sure if still available and whether it would fit with panels. I think if you try to trap some mesh under the plastic bellmouth it will cause running issues. Even fitting a proper one may need some carb adjustments. why not get a peice of gauze mesh and fit it without the bellmouth using a jubilee clip.

Use a piece of your wifes/girlfriends/own tights. Black preferred. But but not the gusset.......oh no!

..fit ever green filter....a gauze is still a restriction.....

Isopon mesh from Halfords jubilee clipped onto the carb works well and doesn't react with the fuel. You could make a few filters out of one sheet and its only a couple of quid each pack. You can also form the sheet over a golf ball or similar to increase the surface area and reduce whatever restriction is caused by the mesh itself.

I have used mesh on mine before, it was fairly big gage mesh as I didn't want to restrict airflow but surprisingly it still ran very rich. So you will have to rejet to suit. Interestingly it was more restrictive than a breath sweat filter.

I can never understand why people won't fit a filter because it "restricts" the airflow, but are happy to put on a piece of gauze/mesh directly on the carb/bellmouth which must surely do the same.
I guess in the "old days" when the choice was standard filter of open/mesh there was a reason, but with todays modern large area filters surely not so?
Maybe I'm missing something, and I've got to admit I've not run a carb open or with gauze/mesh so my comments are purely theoretical and may be totally wrong :lol:

Have run a metal gauze over my carbs for 30 odd years, after a stone flew in and did some damage!
Hammered a fine mesh over a scaffold tube with the edges folded around and trimmed,held on by a jubilee clip.
