Could just be that it needs changing to the Li ramp.

worn plunger teeth- or worse, worn engaging teeth on the gear itself. Just done one for a mate with exactly the same symptoms. Common fault on Lambrettas- my first one failed back in '68 and I, in my youthful wisdom, assumed it was the gearbox shot!!

Looking into this it seems the GP ramp is part of the casing and not bolted to it.jason frost wrote:Could just be that it needs changing to the Li ramp.
And the Indian piston/plunger is 2mm longer?????
I get my kicks out on the floor.
Can I add possible bent (probably Indian) kick start shaft to the conundrum. Experienced that, and it literally had ripped the (Indian) plunger teeth in half as a consequence....
PS. I think you can re-phrese your signiature 'I get my kicks down to the floor'?

GP has a bit cast on the endplate. Just remove that, drill and tap the crankcase side to take the Li rampvRSG60 wrote:Looking into this it seems the GP ramp is part of the casing and not bolted to it.jason frost wrote:Could just be that it needs changing to the Li ramp.

Here are pictures of the 1st gear and plunger. I've not had cause to look at these in detail before. Do either look excessively worn?

The 'pawls' on the piston should be sharp, yours look rounded and some of the teeth in the 1st gear look a bit ropey too
I'd go with a new good quality piston and see if that improves it. It worked for me and I only used a cheap piston off ebay (my 1st gear teeth were also worn). Another thing working in my favour was that I used a Tino Sachi kickstart shaft which I noticed had the circlip groove that retains the little plate that the piston return spring butts against about 10mm further up the piston which increases the spring pressure pushing the teeth into the gear.
