Hello everyone,
I bought (and received last week) this stainless steel tank from beedspeed: http://beedspeed.com/lambretta-petrol-t ... -6670.html since i discovered that my "restored" indian tank was rusty and i had to bin it. Now i have been reeding a series of posts here and there that are quite shocking to say the least about these tanks. :? Can someone draw a line after all that was said and done and OBJECTIVELY tell wether there's something wrong with these tanks or not? The thank is still in the box, i'm planning to mount it tomorrow. My idea was simply to wash it with soapy water, spray some air with the air compressor and put it on.
Any help appreciated,

Flush it out several times minimum with hot water or a tank cleaning product. Horror stories tend to be from tanks that are not flushed out thoroughly. You can get polish which has worked its way into the tank from the polishing process and also very thin residue.....fine grains....I believe from the welding process?

Thanks for the reply, infact to me they seem to be very well made, beedspeed is a very reliable seller and they are not cheap either. I am changing all the dodgy parts that i found on my imported scooter with quality parts. I will definitely wash the tank accurately tomorrow. Do you have one on your scooter nelson? Would be interesting also hearing from someone who has one on his scooter. By the way..hows possible that noone of the dozens aftermarket spare parts producers has thought of making a tank for Lambretta made in the same material of the Vespa PX's tank yet ? :?:

I did have one of these on and found them a very good tank but make sure you clean it thoroughly. Also (as with most aftermarket tanks) you may have to play around with your tank rubbers to get the tank to fit properly. Watch the side where the petrol tap fits especially and make sure the tap will fit without fouling on the engine mount.

i installed the tank, i had to wash it for 2 days, there was plenty of this green/black-ish powder inside... Image not exactly the kind of stuff you wanna find in your barrel! The fit was very tight but ok....

You have to clean the tank thoroughly anyway before you seal it. You should use a tank cleaner called marine clean and then a product called metal prep to prep the surface for sealing otherwise the sealer wont stick very well. I wouldn't just throw tank sealer in it without prepping it properly first. That is why so many people say "my tank sealer started mixing with my petrol after 6 months" because it was not prepped properly.
I do not know if I would use tank sealer in a new stainless tank anyway as stainless is not going to have a great key for the sealer to stick to.
Just my opinion....take it or leave it :D

I used all prodocts recommended for stainless steel, i read that particularly good are those for washing cutlery, dishes, stainless steel surfaces in the kitchen etc..i had plenty at home and i used a ton! (my wife wasnt happy about it! :D) I didnt stop until i could feel even the smallest particles under my fingertips. So far the quality seems really good and so is the welding... and it looks just great. I matched it with a ss toolbox and ss rear mudguard ( i couldnt stand the plastic one!)! I'll check it again after a couple of fill ups but im positive. In the worse case i'll do same like you did.

I know a few in the past have had stainless steel tanks and even alu ones get cracks or hair-line fractures so thought it would be a good idea to seal from new. A mate has this tank seal from frosts in his tank, been in there over 3 years and followed what he did , just wash out tank with clean petrol (no oil) allow to fully dry then add sealer , allow 3 days min to cure. I spoke to frosts before buying and was told the other products are only really needed for old or and rusty steel tanks but can be bought as a kit if needed.
