Then factor in the best of each component whether it be NOS Spanish or Italian, remade or modified SIL, upgraded and reworked to make suitable for a high horsepower fast road motor that's gonna last, and you're really in the £1000'ssoullad wrote:Dread to think what Mikes list would total up in retail value ?

Frankly I think your into several thousand if you use only new high quality parts and updated ones.
Corrado I think you need to reset the game and set the rules

last year my mate was going to buy a full engine and i said why ? ,because you will have to strip it to check its ok .He ended up buying and upgrading a engine block to a bullet proof one and saving money ................

Ok the idea here was to see if it was possible to build a decent quality standardish motor from a bare casing cheaper than to buy a 'factory' motor from fleabay for about a grand and replace all the sh1te within.
Let's assume the spec will be GP iron, factory etc.
Rules :
Choose one part - must be available
Post the price
Post the source
Update the running total
I'll start you off with the engine casing
200 casing with endplate no engine mounts
£289.95
Scooterotica ( none at restos)
Running total : £289.95

the crankshaft bearing is suspect but will do short none thrash for quite some time,it is far cheaper to buy the stock indian 200cc engine and improve it by putting in a new crank or just a rod kit ,new main and mag bearings, chain and nylon style tensioners, this will be quite a good motor further improvements like rear hub bearing can be changed but is less critical,
buying loose components is not the cheapest way unless your building something quick with lots of special and uprated parts.
good cheap engine will cost around £1300 then after this the skies the limit!

Im building a gp from scratch for the fun of it. Started with a frame and been collecting parts when they come up cheap (ebay, Forums, mates etc)
I have just started on the engine and looked at my options and decided that 200 blocks were to much so bought a Sil 150 casing £40. Then Side casing £10. Had to got a new mag housing £30 of SR. I intend to scrounge beg borrow and use ebay etc for cheaper run of the mill parts and invest my money in a Crank, Clutch and decent Top end but I still see this coming in at around the £1000 to £1200 mark and hopefully I will have a better engine than a Sil 200
