Just had a full top end rebuilt on my Polini 208 .

New rings fitted yesterday along with SIP digital speedo as it was suggested I run an engine temp guage as well a a new parma kit fast flow tap

Questions

Do you have to run in anew set of rings?

If yes what speed and for how long.

can new rings cause the same effect as a seize if not ran in for the correct amount of time??

Reason I ask is took it for first 30 mile journey since re build and any thing over 1/4 throttle in 3rd gear caused something similar to a nip up as there was a slowing of the scooter and the engine reved???? This caused great concern .

Main concern is what temperature should this kit run at??

At a steady 45-50 mph it went up to 288 degrees Farenheight as this is what the speedo is set to.

The temp guage range for the speedo is 32-482 F

did plug check light chocolate brown which I believe suggest its not running lean (to cause a seize)

Is this normal as I rode really slow as my malossi 210 only hits 200 on the odd occasion.

Am I worrying over nothing as don't want to risk blowing the engine up

Thanks

I installed the Pinasco ignition kit this year and had similar problems, check the connections on the CDI unit, mine had popped off & jammed causing intermittent connection to the ignition, as if it was constantly nipping up, but never did. Does this make sense.

Having a temperature gauge allows you to not have to decide the jetting by the plug colour alone. It takes all the skill out of it and anyone can do it… :D
When you get your jetting somewhere near you can put in a bigger or smaller main jet (needle clip) to get the temperature where you want it.
On a road 210 you want to be aiming for about 275 degrees Farenheit. It should run slightly cooler when holding at mid throttle.

Just been out and added another 40 miles

temp gauge went up to 320 at the hottest point.

At no time went over GPS 50 MPH and rode for best part of and hour and a quarter non stop apart from fuel stop.

ive now done 65 miles on the new rings and it still has the problem where over 1/2 throttle as the revs increase it appears to be holding back and being restricted as opposed to reving out. its happened in 2nd and 3rd gear.It feels almost like a grabbing feeling inside the engine if that makes sence

Having a fear of it seizing up and not wanting to cause serious damage I then change up.

In fourth there is no problem but im only running half throttle as want to get well over 100 miles in before I even think about giving it some wellie.

when it ran over 300 I tried riding with the choke out and it flooded and ran like an absolute dog and almost stalled .

So im thinking could the problem be

1) fuel supply ??

2) electrical fault

3) timing

4) another issue ???

It used to run an M tech but when it went in for strip check and rebuild it was discovered that the unit was faulty hence it was removed and timing re set and checked.

Going to do another 40-50 or so miles on Friday so rings will be well and truly bedded in .

Any other thoughts advice welcome

gadge, there is a saying run it in fast, it'll go fast. utter shite! but 50gps is to fast to be running anything in at really, without upjetting or going 4%, you should be 3% on a kit as standard, run ye rings in for 150/200 mile, acellerate hard to 30-40-50 speedo mph and ease off throttle, the aim is to bed rings in not polish them. also piston to bore should be 4thou clearance minimum...don,t get hung up on that tackle fanny sip clock yet, your gunna run hotter if ye top ends had something new in it....whats ye ring gap, whats ye piston to bore gap, whats ye jetting, whats ye oil ratio, was scoot running good before work done????

My pollini 177 on my LML reedvalve engine got very hot mid throttle. 26/26 carb, 122 main jet, absolutely fine at WOT around the 280 mark, plug a nice colour etc. but went over 300 at about half throttle. Changed the air corrector from a 160 to a 140 and all is good. No more 'I need to thrash it a bit to cool it down'
