Do I need a Reed Packer Plate ?

Anything related to Lambrettas... ask tech questions, post helpful info, or just read and learn.

I have just taken the reed block off as I am looking to getting rid of the offset cones and wondered why we use a packer plate ? I have measured the depth of a standard reed and the Yamaha one I am using and both are about 43mm deep. Yet you don't get a packer plate with the standard TS1 225 kit. Does that mean the standard one doesn't need one ? If so, why is the Yamaha one the same depth but they say to use one. The one on the right is the one I got with the standard kit and the left one is what I've just taken off.

the theory was when the reeds were open it partially obscured the boost port and the 5mm packer cured the problem...ive used a packer with std reeds but as you found out it caused clearance issues......if there is a performance gain with a packer fitted is debatable

Well, I've refitted the Yamaha Reed without a packer and there is plenty of clearance....so Haven't got a clue. I tried putting the metal stops on like the one in the right and it wouldn't fit in barrel without the packer due to the screws catching on reed block mouth. Maybe that is why they suggest it then....No idea :idea:

id prefer to grind some clearance in the inlet area for the screws rather than leave the stops off...if the barrel is off place the reed block is position and push push the reed that is next to the boost port and look down the barrel,youl see the reed petal partially closes off the boost port,the packer helps this,the original design of the ts1 was for a 200...and this wasnt a problem,when it was opened to 70mm bore the clearance of this petal was a lot less.
leaving the reed stops off can allow the reeds to open too wide hitting the walls of the inlet manifold and cause the edges to feather.
i see your using duel stage reeds on the yam block
get your dremmel out

I haven't had a problem with the petals and not using the petal stops but I can see what you are on about camel. Think I will dremel it like you say and put the stops on now I've taken the packer out. Cheers.

you might be ok then without the stops if you havnt had a problem,i havnt ran this set up,i run v force reeds in mine now and have even less frame clearance
are you having problems with the offset cones?
if there twisting when your trying to offer the motor up in the past ive silicone,d them in place
if you have the packer id be inclined to use it
but if your still on the std manifold things could be a bit tight against the frame

I have had a V Force reed block in before. Loved it with the exception that the petals didn't last above 6 month. The rear wheel looked offset to the frame so I dropped engine to check on offset cones and they were in tight and in the same position :? I removed them and replaced with standard cones and the rear wheel is now central....so don't know what happened there....lol. Now I'm in a dilemma as whether to use the standard cones without a packer to see how it is or put the offset cones back in and use the packer

I have just measured my packer plate and it is 5mm thick and the new ones on MB site are 3mm....that might make a difference.

must admit ive had the exact same problem with cones and i fecked them off too...i can appreciate your dilema
