Cheers Paul... so what your saying is that if I use a GL3 gearbox oil it should improved everything... what about SX75w90 semi gearbox oils?

I've run muligrade engine oil in my T5 yrs ago as I saw it listed in a book when I was in the motor trade,I'm guessing it will be fine on a Bretta too as can't see why that should be different.

why change ? if the usual oil has kept Lambretta gearboxes oils going for fifty odd years it must be doing something right ...........if it ain`t broke and all that ...imho

But if oils have been improved in the last 50 years to the extent that they help to eliminate clutch slip and reduce wear on components, why the feck wouldn't you use them

I also use Silkolene Medium Gear Oil in my Super Monza motor.

But could I find any the last time I needed some...

Hi Dopeshots,
Don't know why anyone would want to run multi grade oils?? But yes 10w/40 or 15w/50 would work ok in a Lambretta, as long as they carry the Jaso MA spec, which is Motorcycle engine oil for use with wet clutches and not 10w/40 car engine oil which as friction modifiers like Molybdenum which isn't any good for a wet clutch. But there is no advantage to using probably a more expensive engine oil as the additional additives are there to clean parts around engine cylinders etc.
The multi grade gear oil will be ok as long as it is GL1,2 or 3 anything above will probably attack silver/bronze parts in your gearbox.

Thanks for your technical input Paul. Does this mean that Silkolene Medium Gear Oil (GL4) would be marginal for my bronze clutch bushes?

What about 10/40 multigrade motorcycle oils which are semi-synthetic and fully synthetic?????
Are they also ok or does the synthetic hamper the use in gearboxs/clutches...........

Hi Minority,
I would contact Silkolene with regards to your use of their oil, but personally would not go any higher in number than a GL3.

Shamrockexpress, can't see the point in using a multi grade engine oil, though if you want to use them, I can see no problems and no issues with either fully synthetic or semi synthetic as long they specify the Jaso MA for wet clutches
