Re-torqueing after rebuild benefits?

Just done a complete rebuild, but is it really beneficial to re-torque the cylinder head nuts after 50 to 100 miles? I want to get the rear runners and bridge piece on to finish it and didn't really want to go through the Lambretta nightmare of head cowling/exhaust/downpipe scenario just to tighten the nuts It's an already used Muggello with the extra 3 nuts if that makes any difference? Obviously if it is worth while I'll get it done but just wondered what the concensus was?

a definite plus point to cutdowns

it is definatly recommended .. I would have assumed the head bolts will stretch (cars and modern bikes cylinder stretch bolts need replacing every time the head is off) so I would say it is worth it

Easier to do that than rebuild your engine when your head comes loose.....

If the top end has been put together without gaskets then I see little if any benefit. The studs are pulling down on an ally head and will NOT stretch at the very low (for the size of stud) torque involved. If paper/fibre or a new ally head gasket have been used then there is a chance that the gaskets will compress after being through a few heat cycles so would then benefit from a re-torque.

I had a chat with a guy from work the other day about torque on the head of mine (ali head no gasket) I have done is as he said and just used grease no gasket....
seems fine to me and no re-torque...

But each to their own and I will probably re-torque to make me feel better

Don't forget the flywheel. On every rebuilt I retorque the flywheel after I set the timing. Just the act of running after the first time will get the flywheel to settle enough it give it a small turn on the wrench.
