i would not rule out the pinasco 225 with a worb 5 head and pinasco 60mm crank and sip road. not the power of the polini but feels vespa still plus some.

I'm looking for a similar kind of engine, a proper rally workhorse and I have been thinking about building a motor based around the Polini ally 210 cylinder and a 60mm crankshaft

Biggest questions are really with regards to crankshaft & packing plates, i.e what is the best to go for?

I'd like to stick to standard induction and preferably a 24 or 26 SI carburettor, if the MB big box exhaust is available in time I will use that, until then a SIP road pipe will be used.
