Tyres question.. high(ish) milage and wear

Hi

Though i posted this yesterday .. but musnt have hit send.

After the debacle with the Weathermans etc, I changed Tyre make. I will say that I didn't experience the same severity of issues with the Weatherman as other have.. the 1st and 2nd sets were perfect, only on the 3rd batch last year I noticed some splitting in between the treads, so rather than take a chance I binned them. The only problem I had was wear on the front Tyre where the outer tread was significantly more worn than the centre line .. causing wobbliness on some cornering and ruts or lines in the road.

Now I have a pair of Conti twists since Jan/Feb.. these don't inspire me with the same confidence I got with the Weathermans in terms of grip.. and I have notices again a "stepped" wear on the front making the handling a little hairy at times.

Has anybody else experienced the same wear pattern, and over what mileage. I cover about 800miles per month commuting to work.. so that's about 2400 miles on the front - back wear is hardly noticeable. With the weathermans I would swap the tyres back to front - but the Contis are directionally different.

So what tyres are people using - whats the grip & durability.. is 3k miles enough for a front tyre change

Front - 22psi
Back - 34 psi

To be honest I think you find the older tyres, such as S1's probably last longer. Don't know what they are like these days. But I had a previous set which were very hard wearing. I reckon they must use harder compounds or something, because we all know tyres these days are softer.

Well S1's : Not much more than 3K life on the rear. Great 'race' tyre for the average bloke in the street, but dodgy in the wet, particularly over painted road surfaces/grids etc.

Contis: Have had the dual compound/wear problem on the front on 'Navigators' and the splitting between treads on the rear,

Conti Twists: preferred tyre at the moment. They do take a LOT (300 Mls) scrubbing in: but no uneaven wear so far. Sure we're on about the same tyre Simplex?. They are a 'semi-slick' and no sign of dual compound on mine.

Perhaps try the Conti Twist Sport (softer compound) or Schwalbe 'paceman' which look good in the show room

I also commute on mine (though about 1/2 your milage) and share your concerns......which should not be the case in 2013!

I've been using the Conti Twist sports.
I've put about 4,000km on the pair that are on, and they're unmarked. For a reason..

I've not had tyres before that give so many scary moments. In the wet, they're a fuc king liability.

Have uploaded some pics .... so you can see what im on about.. they are wearing on the inside of the curve of the tread
Funny enough the tyres I have best got on with were a pair of Yokohama's that came fitted with a set of scootrs rims about 6 years ago. i took them off after about 1.5 years as they showed little sign of wear which was worrying.. but gripped like the day i got them..

I can change tyres. So there! I know those bar steward Asian made S1's are a bit tight on the rim. :shock:

Too stiff fork springs and dampers can cause your front wheel to "bounce around" and cause that sort of uneven wear. Also if you don't have balanced suspension ie an original shagged out rear shock coupled with updated front.

In contrast to Muttley's experience, I had a pair of ordinary Conti Twists a few years ago on a T5 which I ragged around London all year round in all weather and found them to have good grip and wore really well. I have just replaced the worn out Raceman on the rear of my Avanti with a Conti Twist Sport and so far with just over 1000 miles on it I think it's brilliant and will be buying some more as and when I need them. No issues with grip whatsoever on the recent C2C run which was VERY wet on the way back through the Lake District. I tend to check the tyre temps on long runs and find that it stays at a reassuring 'warm to the touch'. What I like about them is the decent speed rating coupled with a high load rating which means it should always be operating well within it's design limits no matter how fast I go or how much weight is being carried.

tyre prressures are high in my opinion

Front - 22psi ???? 18 lambretta
Back - 34 psi ???? 28 solo and 32 pillion

Sorry i dont take any notice of how long a tyres last - just as long as it performers to what i want

Just got new S1`s - they are now made in serbia (so back in europe)
