I've a spare T5 engine on the workbench and a malossi 172 kit ready to fit . I'm wondering has anyone matched the barrel transfers to the casing ? Does it give any noticeable power increase and nearly more importantly , would such work silence the malossi rattle ? The other thing I'm tempted to do is machine out the dividers between the transfers either side of the barrel and maybe file down the transfer dividers in the barrel to smooth flow . It would give more transfer area but would it make a difference ? Any advice appreciated !
the transfers are a really good fit usualy on the malossi you could clean them up but unless your going for a balls out tune leave everything else alone, if you get rid of the death rattle then you will probably get a knighthood lol

What causes the rattle? Is it fin ring? Or piston taper, perhaps?

Thanks ducksta for the quick reply . In fairness , I think the T5 must be the only engine where the transfers in the casing are larger than those on a malossi barrel . They aren't much bigger but there's a difference all the same . I think it must be a cooling thing where the fresh charge splashes the spigot before entering the cylinder . Its the only reason I can think of . Malossi are too long in the game to make an error like this . I'd love to get rid of the death rattle ! It's the only negative thing about the kit......and it's appetite for new rings every 3000 miles .
Spanish Fly , I don't know what causes the rattle . I've filled away the lowest fin a bit to stop it touching the fan cowling and I've tried the largest malossi piston (D or E grade I think) but didn't make any difference . I'm tempted to send a barrel to be replated just to see if a slightly narrower cylinder would silence things but its hard to spend money trying to fix something that isn't broken !

I'm no expert but on my 172 it gets harder to start when the miles creep up past 3000 miles ish . My speedo has eaten so many drives that I've given up fixing it so I'm not completely sure of the miles . My bike goes from 1 or 2 kicks to 4 or 5 when the rings get tired . A guy in my home town never changed the rings on his standard t5 and eventually (after a lot of miles) he seized and ruined his top end . Those kits are so dam expensive that I'm paranoid about loosing another when simple maintenance might keep it alive . I've killed a few top ends through stupidity ! Also my scooter lives a hard enough life . My brother's p2 is quicker than my t5 and I have to drive on to keep up ! Also I talked about transfers in my original post when I meant to ask about the barrel spigot cutouts . I'm tempted to match them to the casings and the piston . Your right about the transfers . On your scooter you could take the exhaust off and shine a torch through the exhaust port on the piston . If there's alot of carbon below the piston rings it wouldn't be a bad thing to change the rings I think .ducksta wrote:my 172 is 7 years old and the transfers matched well, and ime still on the original rings? got me wondering if i need to change the rings but scoots still running well any thoughts.
